Just a moment...

I thought this would get to $2000, I see it went a bit over. Sometimes when I see a gun sell at a little higher price than I expect, I look at see if the buyer is also a seller on GB and what kind of items they buy. I also use this process to decide if I can stay in the fight with another bidder.

So, slow day at home I went back 30 days on the buyer. Purchased 49 guns over the last 30 days, almost $122,000.

No wonder prices are going up. Mind you I don't begrudge anyone anything. Go bless them. But I could not compete with that, wouldn't if I could.

I saw that one.
Thought about it, but I just figured I "Need" -2 70's targets.
Nice one though.
Not the original front sight I figure?
I'm wanting a 29-2 Nickel 6.5 and a Nickel 8 3/8.
Have a 4" blue in my sights and just now a possible 629 no dash 4".
I want to complete my Smith pre 1982 pinned and recessed collection.
I just wished they made a 629 ND in 6.5… now the OCD lunatic in me is wondering whether I need the 629 ND 6" or not to bother?
Or the current - 5 or whatever 6.5?
Either would be an OCD nightmare.

Regarding mass purchases, I have a retired MD friend that has cashed out of stocks and some bonds and is very busy putting his winnings in hard assets and cash. Collectible S&W's, some gold and lots of silver coins are on the menu. He's got real estate. He confers with me regularly on the S&W acquisitions. He only buys the best. Just information.

The Model 29-2 has had a change of finish from bright blue to nickel. It was shipped with two other 29-2s all finished in bright blue. There is no N stamped on the lower left hand corner of the grip frame. No R-N stamp suggests the refinish was done outside of the factory.

Besides the usual refinish telltale signs, did anybody notice the the rounded off edges of the cylinder throat holes?
That's not going to do any good for the leading edges of the forcing cone assuming the buyer shoots it.
It looks like the frame and crane were buffed separate from each other.
What a pro job!

The rust under the grips is a nice touch.

Maybe he really wanted those grips?

Definitely a refinished Model 29-2 that was originally a blued Model 29-2. The nickel plate refinish appears to have been poorly executed, with over-polishing of the side plate and an uneven plating in a few spots. I'd say it's a $800 Model 29-2.

Interesting and nice detective work. Could be that someone just won a lottery or received a significant inheritance or perhaps they are a straw purchaser. I cannot imagine they are a re-seller given the high price they paid for what is obviously a non-original Model 29-2.

Lots of Pythons, fancy 1911s, engraved handguns and shotguns.....agree, it would be hard to resell based on prices paid.

OR...................... They didn't know what we know?!?!?! I'm going to lean with that. On the shallow surface it wasn't a "bad" job, I mean they left front sight blued and all.

I'm afraid that the buyer got taken to the cleaners on this one! I hope that it wasn't one of our Forum brothers. To me, $2300 is awfully steep for an early S-prefix Model 29-2, even with Cokes. A few years ago I had a similar experience when I bought a minty nickel 6" Model 29-2 ca. 1980. It was really sweet, and I was able to get OTD for $950. However, when I got home and cleaned it, I was disappointed when I found the dreaded "R-N 1/89" stamp on the grip frame. Even the GA stocks were stamped during the re-nickel. Oh well, at least it's a very nice factory re-nickel and I still really like this revolver. Caveat Emptor!
