Could someone please provide a close, clear image for a 29-2 rear sight for an "S" prefix made in 1964-65 with 6 inch barrel? I have a real nice shooter grade gun that the original owner mounted a scope to and it's missing the rear sight. I want to install an original, period correct one.

Thank You...

Basically, any white outline rear sight and rib with a windage adjustment screw that is crowned as opposed to flat should be correct for your Model 29-2.

You need the earlier post war sight with the sight tang having the square front end. Mounting screw hole position may be an issue. The hole on the K-Frame sight was moved slightly, but I don't recall if the hole was changed on the N-Frame sight. It's just that simple, a photo wouldn't be any more help. These are the only differences until the "new style sight" with a round tang that was changed in the 1980s.

Shouldn't a 29 of that vintage have a 6 1/2" barrel?

You want a square tang rear sight...

The critical dimension is as follows...

You will only find these sights in the secondary market. Ebay may be a good source, but before you buy confirm that measurement.

Also, the blade height for a 6 1/2" 29 should be .146". This is not critical as the sight blades have not changed and are still available from S&W. They sell them w or w/o a white outline and they come with a new windage screw. Larry Potterfield has a You Tube video that shows how a blade change is accomplished.

Adios,
