29-2 (?)

I've been searching for a 29-2 (Dirty Harry) and this one I came across is drilled and tapped (3 holes) on the top strap for a scope I assume.
The rear sight blade covers the holes but my concern is since the top strap is the thinnest part of the gun will this cause some kind of failure down the line?

I know S&W does this kind of custom work but it's anyone's guess who did this work.

Unless it was a smoking deal I'd pass on that one. I don't know that it would hurt it but when I find my Dirty Harry gun I don't want it altered. JMO.

I just bought a nice 8 3/8" 25-5 with two extra hole's like that for a good price. It hurt's the value a bit. The the new Smith's come that way so I dont think it's a safety concern.

It wont hurt the strength, but it does affect the value. I sold one here awhile back like it (only 2 holes) for $650. It was a great shooter and I didnt really have an issue with the holes, but I found an "S" prefix shooter that was unaltered.

if the price is good i dont see why it wouldnt make a good shooter, but i wouldnt pay top price

Remember in the used gun business 'condition is everything' so I agree with everyone for a good price pick it up.

I personally would not buy a 44 Mag or 357 Mag that has been drilled and tapped.

The holes are for a Leupold base, or maybe a Redfield. Since the factory does the same thing these days, it seems unlikely it will affect the strength of the gun in any way. If the workmanship is good, I wouldn't give them another thought if the price is right on the gun. If the workmanship is poor (poor quality threads, over-chamfered holes, etc.) then I might not want the gun.

If not over-chamfered, you can always plug the holes and you will hardly know they are there, but if just knowing they are there worries you, you better look for another gun.

With the three drilled holes I wouldn't give you more then $150 for that DH and if you can get $700 off take the money and cash and enjoy.
