29-3 Question??

I spoke about this gun earlier in the week. Well I spoke with the owner and what he has is a 100% NIB 6" 29-3 nickel gun. The only thing missing is the tools. He said that he opened them and put them with the rest of his cleaning kit. He bought this gun brand new in the 80's and has never fired it. The gun has just sat in his safe. I saw the gun earlier this week and it was beautiful. I bought a NIB 66-3 off of him and I told him I would call back about this gun. He told me today that he would take $900 for it. I'm not a Smith expert is why i'm asking what your thoughts are. Will this gun go up in Value? I'm a small collector of Colt revolvers but have started buying and collecting some Smith's. I don't plan on ever shooting this gun I will be bought and stored. Have these guns gone up in value lately or have they leveled off? Thanks for any help

I think its top of market for a 29-3 as it is a very common barrel length and it is not Pinned and Recessed...Although a great shooting revolver...It seems the most collected 29's are the 29-2 and earlier guns with the Pinned Barrels and Recessed Cylinders...

Now that being said...If you truly are not going to shoot it and leave it 100% with Box and docs etc...you certainly will not lose any money in the long run on it..

$300 high in my view. But having said that, 29-3's make great shooters. Of all the pre-29's, 29's, 29-1, 29-2 and later revolvers that I own, my go-to .44 Belt Gun is a 4" 29-3.

Thanks for the advice. I truly don't ever plan on shooting this gun. I just picked up a Colt Anaconda as my New years gift and I don't ever plan on shooting it even though it's been shot. I'm truly looking for only collectible guns. As far as price, I don't think he will even get close to $600 for it. He's pretty firm at $900. Thanks Again

$900 is ridiculously high for a 29-3. He'll be sitting on it for a while at that price....unless some sucker comes along.

I agree he's too high. Unfired in box $750 high max. If it was a more unusual model, such as the full underlug with Silhouette sights or some other lower # produced one, possibly more but not much.

I'm thinking that the 3" guns are "worth" the most followed by the 10 5/8".

I find one of the easiest ways to test the price waters is to look on gun sites like GunBroker.com. The actives will give you current asking prices however, the recent solds will give you what prices are actually being realized. A private face to face friend type of transaction usually will bring less as you are dealing with one potential buyer not 100.

I have a 29-3 with the 10 5/8 barrel (Silhouette gun) that could possibly be worth $900 but a standard 6" has not reached that level IMHO.
