Friends,

My buddy at work just won an auction for a 2x Leupold pistol scope. He wants to mount it on a 29-3 that has the pre-cut dovetail slots. I tried to search for mounts for this and have some questions.

1. Does he need an external bracket or mount?
2. Do you just mount a ring directly to the dovetail (looks pretty narrow to me)?
3. Can anyone steer me in the right direction for whatever is required?
(I did try a search on large optics website to no avail).

Thanks ahead of time, JJB

I never seen a pre-cut dovetail outside of a few PC guns. The factory standard set up was three holes drilled and tapped under the rear sight strap. But I don't think that happened till the -6 29s' around '93-94.

S&W made some Model 29-3's with four little notches or recesses on the top of the barrel, two on each side of the rib, and included rings for mounting scopes. This was about 1989, and there is a photo of it on page 202 of SCS&W III. I don't know what other rings would work, or if the original rings are available from the factory.

When folks say they want a scope on their pistol , I urge them to go lie down and see if that feeling goes away .

Hey Joeygun, does the gun you talking about look like this one?

And here's another one S&W made, it's a 586.

The 629 and 686 models were also made with the rings but they were supplied with blued rings! All these guns were made in limited runs. The rings supplied with the guns were made by Millet.

Jcelect, mystery solved!!!! Thank you, we now know what to look for. The revolver may have had them but they did not come with it as my buddy is at least owner #2. Thanks guys, I do appreciate all of the replies.
