Some years ago.....

I purchased a 29-4 unfluted cylinder and had a 5" full underlug barrel put on.

It shot good but in 2019, I noticed the trigger started to go away.

I dug into the gun and noticed it was a floating hand and it was sloppy.

Anyway..... got to examining the revolver further.

the ejector rod does not touch the spring loaded detent in the underlug and the barrel seems just a touch off center.

what is the proper fix to get the ejector rod and detent to interact with each other?

would that mean machining some material off the barrel to get another turn and then refit the barrel to cylinder gap?

is there a preferred gunsmith that does this type of work?

you cannot see it in the image, but the ejector rod and detent are separated.

They do look far enough apart in your picture to notice they aren't touching sir....

My best suggestion to you sir would be to give Alex Hamilton over at Ten ring, In San Antonio Texas a ring on the telly, he has done some absolutely fantastic work for me and turned it around in about a months time...

Short of cutting the barrel shoulder/forcing cone back i don't know what more you can do... IMO

To me, the questions concerning the front locking lug fit and the barrel mis-alignment issue should be addressed by the gunsmith who installed the barrel.

You can mitigate the lug/extractor rod contact issue some by using a slightly longer extractor rod collar to lengthen the OAL of the assembly. In addition, you can "let out" the current front locking lug by removing it from the barrel, and opening up the front portion of the retaining pin cutaway in the f.l.lug . By removing material from the front (muzzle side) of the retaining pin slot in the lug, when it is re-installed, the lug will protrude out further from it's cavity. These adjustments are limited though, and may not be enough to create the kind on contact you want at this front locking lug and extractor rod interface.

Is it possible the ejector rod that was used when the gun was assembled had previously been shortened from factory-new spec for some reason? Maybe a take off part that was used on another gun?

I agree that whoever fitted the barrel originally should address this matter for you. I'm a little surprised you didn't notice it until now, but I guess I been guilty of worse. :o Hope you can get it corrected without too much hassle.

I actually did that and the action binds on 2-3 holes, that lead me to the barrel being off a touch (or appears that way to me)

I spoke to the gunsmith who did this (year 2014) and he told me the underlug detent and ejector rod were ok separated. I figured he did not want to mess with it and I chalked it up for experience. I wont do business with him anymore and its not important who he is.

This project has been sitting for sometime.... just had too many irons in the fire.... and I am working on thinning my herd and this should be the last of my guns with issues.

If the cylinder is binding as it rotates, either the lug and extractor rod are not fit properly, there is runout in the extractor rod, or the yoke is out of alignment.

Yes. Makes me wonder if the previous owner didn't shorten the rod to cover up the issue in order to facilitate a quick sale.

There is no issues. I bought the 29 as a 8 3/8" (I think) and then bought the 5" full under lug barrel.

To me, the couple of issues are very minor which are beyond my abilities/equip. Now my hand is sticking. It's a floater.

I live in the N Dallas area . If it were mine, I would take it to Mikes Gun Room in Richardson and have his top notch gun smith Mark fix it . Mark is truly a champion when it comes to working on S&W's . Marks an " old school " gunsmith , been doing it for many years . His turn around time is usually just a week or two . Regards Paul
