Admin UPDATE-
To quote Mark Twain, "The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated."
I am happy to report that DWFAN still walks the earth!

original post-

Picked up this 29 No Dash today in a trade. Pretty decent gun has some finish issues mainly on the front of the barrel. I believe the grips are Cokes based on my limited knowledge. They have a small chip that I would like to get repaired. I have seen post on here about someone who does this but can't seem to find them on here any help would be appreciated. Serial number starts with S193 whould should be 1958/59.

Can't post pics from camera????

Congratulations on the 29! I got my 1st 1, (6") Nov.of 2017. Mine is a -3 from 1988. Much newer than yours. Bought a -2 nickel, 4" last April. Sold it in November 18. I hand load, and have enjoyed shooting heavy .44 special loads in magnum cases. Enjoy your 29! Did I miss the barrel length? Bob

Any day a no dash or pre model 29 shows up in the collection is a good day. Congratulations on your "new" 29 lol.

Just got message back from DWfan's son. Unfortunately he passed away in October. His son haves moved to Alaska.

That's a beautiful old 29. Do the stocks number to the gun? If so, here's what I'd do. If you plan on shooting the gun a good bit, I'd take those original stocks off and put on some other S&W target stocks...just to keep the originals from getting damaged any further.

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't be all that concerned about that chip out of the left stock, or any minor dings or scratches on the wood. After all, the gun's about sixty-years-old. For me, the chip adds to the gun's "personality". But that's just me.

I know you didn't ask for advice, so just call that a suggestion.

I was told these are Rosewood Cokes and are pretty valuable. Are they worth more repaired or with the chip. I plan on shooting the gun so I'll probably put on some cheaper grips and either keep or sell these.

I think your stocks are made of Goncalo alves like 99.99 percent of the stocks on 44 Magnums. I would have the stocks repaired and keep them on the Model 29 as original equipment. The serial number dates your Model 29 to 1959/1960.

This is the first I've heard of this, I'm aware that Hugh Clark passed recently but not DWFAN.

I didn't know the gentleman but looks like it was Mr. Clark

Yes I had gotten a email from the sons similar to the one you posted because I had asked about a grip restoration.

I recently found a 29 no dash that I believe dates to around 1960, asking $690. It looks like yours on the left side, but when I turned it over it had silver flecks all over the barrel where the blueing was gone. A few on the right side frame as well. Still considering it, as I don't have a .44

Do you think that's a reasonable price?

I think if it is in good mechanical condition it would make a great shooter

oneharley,
I think you are confusing your communications. DWFAN is NOT Hugh Clark.
DWFAN was logged in on this board in Dec, 2018.
