My son has picked up a 2 29s and wants some info on them the only thing I know about smiths are the 600 series. one is a 4'' SERIAL #S255017 he thinks the s serial number means something. the other one is a 6"" serial #n601948. many tnx to you guys that help.

The S serial number comes from 1964/65 and the N comes from1979/80. The S is just earlier and because of that the gun may be more desirable to collectors. As always, condition is important.
 
If that 4" s serial revolver is in good condition, and has the original grips/stocks, he really has something. The 6" is very desirable too.

Did either or both happen to come with their cases, tools, and papers?

Congratulations are in order, the 29 is possibly the most iconic of all the "modern" S&W revolvers. It is certainly up there.
 
If you could post several pics, there are several folks on here that would love to give their commentary.
 
tnx guys for all the help on my boys 29s he has only the guns nothing else. about pics im computer stupid so that wont happen. I have about 30 6oo series smiths that I enjoy shooting but when it comes to the older ones im lost again many tnx for the info.
