I'm looking at a 2nd Model Hand Ejector 44 S&W in the 88xxx range. What are some things I should look out for? It's definitely not a collector grade handgun. What would be a good price range for a well worn gun?

I lucked into one with lots of wear, but good mechanics and bore at a local auction a couple years for $350. I would think $500 would be a good deal.

The Standard Catalog of S&W 4th Edition says a gun in fair condition $850. That is probably for a 6 1/2" barrel. Think 4" or 5" guns will bring a premium. This info is 7 years old, so I would think current prices would be north of that.
Here is my 5" that went to a deputy sheriff in Potter County Texas in 1926.

Just read in S&W 4th that the top reported SN is in the 59xxx range. Are you sure about 88xxx?

I picked up this 5" built on a leftover 1917 frame a couple years ago for $350. I added the magnas & grip adapter

Bruce,
I like it! Would be willing to offer you a profit, ha ha.

By the way, see you were Air Force. Have a sister that did 23 years and retired as a Lt. Col. Very proud of her.

Thanks, David.
I actually offered it once to someone for $550, they turned it down. Of course, that was before I dressed it up.

The Air Force was my introduction to Texas. Been home ever since.
