Gary7...the sight and blade may be forged together on the 27s and 28s, but the blade was pinned with a single pin on the 29s and 57s.

I saw this thread...
Jumped up and scurried down to the saddle shed...Good, my 3 1/2" Pre-28 Hwy Patrolman was still holstered & hangin' on my saddle horn, ~Smiley~

I thought the sight blade was forged with the ramp?
![]()
Gary...I believe S&W forged the barrel, ramp and sight blade together for the Model 29 when they standardized the barrel length for their N-frame models at 6-inches in 1979.
Dave...a neat looking and shooting Model 28.

Dave,
Is that a 27 barrel on your 28? I think I can see a faint trace of checkering along the top....plus the finish looks shiny compared to the rest of the gun.....That's a real sweet one though![]()

Yep, it's a 27 barrel re-bored and cylinder rechambered to 45 Long Colt. So, the moral is don't take anything a face value...It's kinda like a fun house mirrow.
I don't collect rare or vintage S&W...But, I'm a carrier! ~Smiley~

Gary7-
I spotted your pin right away.
If you look at your picture and count the teeth on the front sight blade (not the the ramp base) starting at the bottom, or rear end of it, then count up to the 12th and 13th teeth, then go straight down to the base (straight as if the gun were perfectly level, and not sitting tilted like it is in the pic), and look at the area centered on the base, you can easily spot the sight pin.![]()
That photo is not mine. I just pulled it from the sales forum for illustration.
I have, however, looked closely at both my 28 and 629 and it's clear to me that the sight blade is part of the same metal as the ramp. There is no discernible pin, nor is there any seam showing on the muzzle edge of the ramp and blade that would indicate they are two separate pieces.

That is what she looked like except the finish was all matte like the HP finishes were. Neat gun there Dave. Although I have no interest in having a 3 1/2" N frame, (please forgive me), I am very interested in that one I saw at the gun show. I would like to know more about it.
