Just received this 1940 vintage .357 Magnum with original 3-1/2” barrel. It has the classic police front sight setup with Baughman Quick Draw front sight on a plain (non-reflector) King Ramp base. It was shipped to the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety in a 1 gun shipment on February 23, 1940.

Finish is original but has faded and/or turned a golden brown in places with some light pitting in a couple spots. There are no factory rework marks and the factory blue is very nice in many areas including the cylinder flutes, most of the barrel, and forward areas of the frame. I suppose it rates somewhere around 75% - 85%. Mechanics are truly excellent.

It was received with post-war Magna grips; the correct grips which I put on the gun are excellent, probably a little too nice for the gun, and date to 1937. If anyone reading this has some slightly lesser conditioned Magna grips available please contact me.

All of the small sight screws had to be tightened which is something I always check before going to the range.

Anyway, here are a few quick pictures and I’ll give you a range report probably sometime next week. I’m really looking forward to shooting this gun as I have not previously shot a pre-war Magnum with a 3-1/2” barrel…..

Range report as promised….. It’s a really nice shooting gun. I did tighten the rear sight screws but made no sight adjustments before or during shooting. Pictured were my first 6 shots at 15 yards using a dead center hold from a rest…..

After that I shot it 19 more times from both the rest and offhand with 7 in the red, 6 in the 9 ring, and 6 in the 8 ring.

Please allow me to correct an earlier analysis of this NRM; after reconsidering several characteristics of the finish and markings on this gun I feel it has been at least partially refinished. Sorry if I misled anyone. On the positive side all serialized components (except grips) are matching, configuration letters as original, mechanics are excellent, and the period correct Magna grips which I added are excellent.
