New member here, however, I have searched this forum as a guest many times. Looking for some advice; I have found a 3" 586-4 with the serial number starting with "BRU" that is going for $1500. It appears that there is some minor wear to the barrel, however, from what I've seen in this forum, this is a pretty hard to find revolver. Does the price seem too high, or should I look into it?

That is a pretty rare bird you have found there. However, the price seems high to me (but I have been called cheap on occasion) 
. However, a gun is worth what you want to pay for it. All of us have overpaid for a bucket list gun at some point.
I will let the guys and ladies here who eat and breathe 3" .357s weigh in as they are more knowledgable myself.

Interesting, I wasn't even aware that there were 3" 586s out there. I can't imagine that they change hands that often so check GB like jagular mentioned then if you don't have luck there, how badly do you want it? I've been known to willingly overpay for certain firearms I've been after for a time due to rarity.

The only correct answer: Whatever makes you happy. If you're willing to pay that much, go for it. I can guarantee you there's someone else out there who will, but make sure you know what you're getting. At that price, I'd expect some verifiable provenance.

There are new 3" 586s on the market currently, the ported Performance Center version.
$1500 for a 3" 586-4 is a fair price if you want one, they were limited production so it may take a while before you will find another. Good luck in your decision.

I believe you're right sir. The 3" models that I've seen on gunbroker are new models. Thanks for your feedback.

I have one of the new 3" 586 L-Comp and it is really cool. However, it is not a -4. So, it really depends on what you want. If the -4 is a bucket list gun, grab it. Just figure you'll keep it 10 years and with S&Ws continually gaining value, it will be worth what you paid for it plus you will have enjoyed it for 10 years. See, I can justify any firearm purchase in my mind

The non-ported -4 is a huge plus over the ported models in my humble opinion.
You are correct sir! I saw the posting last night while hunting on the web for pre-lock 586's. I wanted to get some pricing opinions on the forum because I was unable to find much about older 3" models. When I was able to call, they let me know that it has been gone. Fantastic, solid work from that particular vendor!

That is an old ad and I'm surprised it's still up...I bought that very gun several years ago! I did end up paying $1200 shipped but I wanted it so there it is. Came with original box and papers so I'm happy with it. There's no wear on the muzzle. I had it lettered and it was 1 of 208 for RSR IIRC. I think there was another run of a couple hundred so total for this gun could be around 400 or so. It came with the Hogue grips others have mentioned. Seeing that thousands of 3" 66's were made and they are north of 1k in price I figure I didn't get a deal but not too bad.

Like the S&W 650 3" J frame, I have never seen a 3" prelock 586 in the wild. Heck, regular 4" 586's seem hard to find. Id absolutely pay $1,200 to $1,500 for one.

THE 686-4 IS A HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER ITERATION OF 686---ALL THAT YOU NEED, AND NOTHING THAT YOU DON'T, AS FAR AS ENGINEERING CHANGES GO, SEEMS TO BE THE PREVALENT OPINION. I WOULD ASSUME THAT THE SAME WOULD APPLY TO THE BLUED VERSION. WITH A SET OF NICELY GRAINED, WOODEN, S&W COMBAT GRIPS, I THINK THAT IT WOULD BE A VERY ATTRACTIVE REVOLVER.....
IMHO, A PORTED 3" GUN IS JUST A WASTE OF MONEY, AS ARE THE PC GUNS---UNLESS YOU LIKE THE SPACE GUN LOOK OF SLAB SIDES AND TAPERED UNDER LUGS. THEY SEEM TO HAVE AS MANY PROBLEMS AS GUNS FROM THE STANDARD LINE. INCREASINGLY AT S&W, THE TASK OF QUALITY CONTROL INSPECTIONS HAS BEEN RELEGATED TO THE END USER---PC GUNS OR NOT......
