3” barrel on a Model 67

Is it so that you'll have (and prefer) the adjustable sights? Have you considered trying to find a 3 inch model 64? This is assuming you want something in stainless.

By the time you find a nice shape 64 barrel and then have it properly installed, the cost might be the same or a little higher than trying to find a 3 inch 64 (unless you can do the barrel removal/installation yourself).

Not being in any way critical here, just making sure you've explored a different option that might save you some money and trouble.

I own a 67-5. I live in California so I have to work within what’s on the state’s roster.

Even getting a 67 was restricted to the -5.

I carry a 640 pro, and would like to carry my 67, just would be a little more concealable with a 3” barrel

Thanks for your input

Is it feasible to have my 4” barrel machined/modified to 3”?

If so, where is a reputable place to get the work done?

Thanks

Welcome to the S&W Forums. Yes, your 4 inch Model 67 barrel could be cut to 3 inches and the front sight moved. I doubt that it will be a low-cost project as good gunsmiths tend to be expensive. You need to weigh the cost versus benefit.

Thanks for your input.

I’d consider getting a different stainless K frame Smith that has a 3” barrel, but the CA DOJ really limits what I can own.

OP, you can shorten and crown the barrel yourself, might as well round butt it also. Then bring it to a gunsmith for a dovetail cut on the barrel rib.
Probably the most economical solution. If you are in the least bit handy, should be a breeze.

Just work patiently.

It might be cheaper and easier to fit a 2.5" Model 66 barrel.
Model 64 and 65 barrels were available in 3" and turn up occasionally. You would only need a taller front sight milled in.

Careful that you do not encroach upon the serial number stamped into the bottom of the grip frame if you decide to give it the round butt treatment.

So: Model 64,65, and 66 barrels all would fit the Model 67 frame?

You could hunt down a 3" 64 barrel, I think the magnum barrels would be too short due to the magnum 65/66 cylinder being longer than yours. If you get an older barrel the front sights are pinned in and can easily be replaced by your smith.
There are several good smiths in CA depending on where you are. Mariviov, did work for Davis and has built me 2 PPC guns one when he was at Davis and one after.

Here is a picture of my model 67 that has a 4" 64 barrel installed and the front sight from a model 17. Wifes is the top gun. These were our issue guns in LA.

Do they still have Calguns there. Good place to check for guns and parts. I have been gone from there for years "Thank God" so dont know whats still available. Good luck.

OP, as a general rule, a good gunsmith can get you just about anywhere you want to be within the laws of physics -- provided you have enough time and money.

What you're wanting to do can be done, but it's a lot more than a simple swap; you'll probably end up paying as much for the job as you did the gun. Is the juice worth the squeeze? I'd say no, but to each his own.

I conceal carry 3" round butt and 4" square butt Ks. To me, there just isn't enough difference where the rubber meets the road to justify all the attendant nuisance and cost to remove one mere inch of barrel.

Find an on-roster round butt snubby and make that your carry, and leave the 67 be, I think.
