Now that I have my first 3" barrel revolver on the way (it gets here tomorrow :D ), I have a couple questions about the grips. What grip lengths do you guys prefer for revolvers with 3" barrels?...full-size or compact "boot" grips?

They seem to look a little odd with full-size grips, but I'm worried that if I want to shoot primarily magnum loads, the boot grips may not provide enough surface area for good control. On my previous revolvers I'm loved the feel of Hogue fingered grips, both in wood and rubber, but the photos I've seen just don't look quite right with that barrel length.

I'm curious to hear your opinions. :)

***Edited to add: I'm referring to the L-frame in general and the 686 Plus in specific***

You probably need to tell us what frame revolver we are discussing?

Very nice revolvers Colt SAA! Sorry for not including that, it's an L-frame 686 Plus. I'll update the original post as well.

If you are not carrying it, I would use whatever makes the gun handle best for you. Hopefully that will also look good to you. You may need to try several types before finding the right set.

That^^^^^^^^^^^^^ is good advice.!!!

If you're carrying concealed.......as much grip as you can conceal!!!! LOL Generally the grip is the hardest part to conceal....

I like Spegel's boot grips on guns 3" or less....... extended Boot grips on 4 and 6 inch guns...thou I do use a Boot grip on a 4" 66 that I sometimes conceal........ all guns carried in M. Spark's Summer Special holsters.

I was using Hogue Bantams on my 2.5" 686. They handled fine, and recoil was no problem. But, off the draw, I couldn't get a great grip right away. I had to work my fingers down into the finger grooves, which was annoying. I recently bought a pair of Pachmayr compact professionals. They feel similar to the Hogue Bantams, just no annoying finger grooves. I haven't shot it yet with those on it, so I don't know how it's going to handle. The rubber on the Pachmayrs also isn't as tacky. I'm looking forward to using them.
