Today I looked at some S&W's that were for sale from a private collection .He had a 3 gun set that came in a huge fitted walnut presentation box .All 3 guns in one box . The set consisted of a 6" 629, a 4" 63, and a 6" 686 . All mint and unfired . I only handled the 686 and it was a no dash model so the entire set must be from the mid 80's .
Aybody remember these being offered by S&W back then ? He wanted $2200.00 for the set .
He also had a new, unfired 629 DX . It was a dash 5 model . He wanted $900.00 for it .
Thanks for any information .

There were banks offering guns instead of interest payments and some of these guns were S&Ws, often in 2 and 3 guns sets in multi-gun presentation cases. These sets were put together by vendors after the guns left S&W in cases from a variety of sources. The sets weren't put together at S&W. Perhaps that is what the man is offering. The "set" doesn't have any value greater than the individual guns.

ahhhhh back in the day when deposit interest rates were good......I'd take 3 guns in lieu of the .30% I earn on my money.....:D.....

Thanks Buff for the info . I'm trying to get him to break the set .
How about the price on the 629DX-5 ? It's not part of the set .

For the 3 guns you mentioned, I would not pay over 1,500 for them just to give you an idea.

Pricing is relative to demand, geographic zone, etc. From what I've seen on the market, these prices are a bit aggressive. The three gun set breaks down to individual ballpark prices as follows: 6" 629 -> 700-800; 4" 63 -> 500-600; 6" 686 -> 550-700. The unfired 629DX goes for 700-800. Again, these price ranges are what I have seen as late, and are not buyer's guide quotes, etc. Lack of boxes, paperwork, etc. will affect pricing as well. S&Ws aren't getting cheaper, but overpaying for models that are not unique is simply overpaying and waiting for your investment to catch up.

Man-oh- Man, I thought I was doing good when I got a toaster, a couple of cheap pens and a calender:eek: Ya think some M.B.A. pulled a fast one one me?

interesting...if the guns are all in excellent (unfired?) condition...come with a nice custom case..it's a bit high for my area of va.but not outrageous...and if the original boxes and docs come with it...hmmmm....assuming you like all of them and need them for your collection....maybe offer him $1800.00

I think the 3 Gun set would be a fair buy at $1900-$2000, especially in that condition with papers. And as has been said; the 629 DX is a $700 pistol. Good luck with trying to split that collection but I would'nt think that is a option. Just thinking of what that collection in a case looks like makes my mouth water.

That's only 500 bucks each for 3 mint, unfired Smiths from the early to mid 80's . I wish but it's not gonna happen at that price .

The guns are as mint as they can be but I'm not sure about the original boxes and docs .
I thought those DX models sold for more than the standard model .

Well you mentioned that they are loose mint guns with no box or papers. Carefully looking you can find a 686 in that condition loose for 500 and also find the 63 for that price. The 629 I would only pay the 500.00 for just to get a little deal on one of the guns since you are buying 3 at once. Do what you want but paying over 1,600 to me would be overpaying and none of the guns are rare or hard to find in that condition.

The going price for the modern equal of these guns is just about the $2200 price being asked for the set. I would rather pay that much for the new condition, old stock guns.

Best,
Rick

nick...i would explore this one a bit...original boxes/docs mean quite a bit...if they are not there..well...u still have what sounds like excellent presentation case....let us know what you do...and pics would help as well

The list price for my DX 6 1/2 was $600 back in 1992 when I bought it new. The DX was special and specially packaged with a target and a set of replaceable sights. Have you priced a gold bead front lately?? The -5's may be some of the last DX's. I would hope it had the box and all the inside stuff for $900. I would not sell mine for that, though.
