No matter the era from which it comes the percentage of Model
37s with 3" barrels was likely small.

Mine is from the late 70s.

So 10+ years newer than yours.

Square butt, came with rubber grip which I replaced with a new wood grip similar to the original stock grip.

It's a shooter and a potential carry gun -- not a collector piece.

I have a 3" Model 37. I'll have to take a look at it tonight.

I believe I was the first person outside of the factory to fire it.

Mine is from the late 70s.

Out of curiosity I searched the Chiefs database for 3" Model 37s.

In the serial number range of yours, J100000 - J999999 (1973 - 1982),
I count 61 3" Model 37s out of 233 Model 37s entered into the database.

You can't count this as a realistic statistical presentation because
the sample size includes only those listed in the database that
have surfaced during the period I've been tracking serial numbers
(about eight years).
