I am considering purchasing a S&W 629. I want the 3 inch model.
It has the full lug barrel, unfluted cylinder and non magna ported. And of course, no lock.:D
Which models were made like this, and about when were they made?
About what would be the going price on these?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Had one ....

back in the early 90s? Great shooter but didn't like the unfluted cylinder. Sold a long time ago ... duh!

You're looking for a 629-2, made in about 1989, like this one:

I purchased an unfluted 3" 629-5, (locks started with -6), for $850 in Omaha last December. A Lew Horton Classic Carry, circa 2000. I am very pleased with it.

Thanks for the replies.
It looks like the -2 and the -5 came in what I am looking for.

I bought a 3 inch 629-5 and really like it alot. Very accurate for a short Bbl. Bought it new sometime in the late 90's for $500.

629-2

I paid $550 for mine. I'm told only 3200 were made, so not sure how easy it is to find one. I love mine!

I have 2 of these, model 629-2e. Serial Numbers BEE5xxx. I bought them both new back in 1989. They cost $379 each then.

The "e" designation was for an "endurance" package that beefed up the ability to handle hotter magnum loads. Every model after that, i.e. -3 onward, included the modifications.

BTW: mine came without MagnaPorting, I added it later on both of them.

I got one of them laying around too!
629-2E
Use it every time I go camping,
Got it a few years back for something like $429.
Nice shooter.

Thanks for all the replies and pictures. Now I really want one.
I do not think I am going to find one in this day and age at the prices posted above.:D

I just noticed something on these revolvers.
Some I have noticed have the red ramp front sight. Others look like they have a plain front sight. Was the sight an option?
I am looking for one of these right now and have found only a couple for sale.

I also noticed that the -5 models have the MIM parts. Is that an issue on a big bore revolver?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

The standard sights were all that were available on the dash 2E models, AFAIK.

As to MIM parts, I don't have any firearms new enough to have them, so I can't give an informed opinion.

Regarding the "sights" question:
You can see the WO rear sight, no RR on my above example. So, we know they came like that...

Thanks for the replies.
On the pictures above, the only one with the red ramp is the -4. The 2E's don't have them, neither does the -2.
However I found a -2 with the red ramp. Kind of confusing.
I kind of feel the same way on the MIM parts, but I guess I can live with it if that is all I can find.
On the red ramp front sight, I guess I can live with or without it.
Hopefully I will find one soon.:D

You can buy a red ramp sight. They are pinned so you will just have to mark the sight and drill a hole on the new one.

I have a 629-2e and I suffered buyers remorse for a few days , but now `I`m over it and I really like this gun.

I still think I overpaid for it $900 !!!

I have Crimson trace laser grips on it and it is a very deadly revolver, probably be the last one I`d let go of.

If you can find one for less then $900, jump all over it.

I bought one last November and I think I paid about $750 for it. Its got an AVP serial (as I recall). Right after I posted that, one of our members here contacted me wanting it. His initials are AVP. It was still new then, and I kept it. Nice gun, but I haven't shot it yet.
