3" M29-2 question

How rare is a 3" M29-2 revolver with original box and paperwork?

An FFL I use just called and offered me first shot at one.
I didn't even know S&W made a 3" M29.

He says the gun is very nice and well taken care of.
When I asked him how much he wanted for the gun, he said he hadn't figured out what it was worth.

You guys have always given me good advice before, so what is an average price for a gun like this?
I do not have any more details that what was stated above when it comes to condition. I have not seen the gun either.

Just looking for a ballpark estimate.

Be prepared to spend a lot of money. If the 3" barrel is factory original that is......of course this all depends on condition, age, grips, etc.

I see 6 1/2" 29-2s going for north of a grand, usually the shorter the barrel the higher the price.

Only Doc44 would know for sure if they made any factory 3 inch guns. It could be a Jovino. I am sure that Smith never cataloged a 3 inch 29-2. There are some later dash models with the 3 inch barrel, though.

Thousands of 3" model 29s have been made over the years. Mine was produced in 89.

A factory original 3" Model 29 that is P&R would be very, very rare.

I would bet that it will not letter as a 3"

Check the grip frame. No 3" inch 29-2 were made. Most likely a Behlert or Jovino or other custom job. RB frames were not made yet for the N frame in the 29-2. There is a 29-3 with a RB grip frame non pinned and recessed. These run from 800-1300 depending condition and goodies

Would this be a something worth having, assuming the seller is reasonable?
I tend to prefer my Smiths to be all original factory issue, but if this gun is desirable I might buy it.

The seller just sent me photos of this 3" M29.
The factory box is labeled as a 3" M29 with a serial number of ALA 932#, and a production code of 101224.
The seller thinks this is a Lew Horton special production gun. He says he is leaning towards pricing this gun at $1,000.
The gun shows some light signs of usage, but overall it is in very good shape. The gun has Pachmeyer rubber grips. I guess $1,000 would be a fair price.

The seller also has a 6" M629-1 he is about to list on Gunbroker. This gun also appears to be in very good shape. He hasn't decided how to price this gun, but he has indicated he has a lot invested in it.
Anyone want to offer a reasonable price for a nice M629-1?

That product code is a 1985 run of 200 revolvers hat was done for Lew Horton.

It is NOT a 29-2. It's a later unpinned and non-recessed model. Likely a special edition by Jovino or something like that. Pay what's it worth to you.

It's hard to find a gun for a reasonable price. I'd probably pay 7 to 800 if I were in the market for one....I've seen them go for more, and a few go for less.

BEWARE !
There are Model 29s that have been cut to 3". The ones I have observed have been very professional done.

The 101224's I've seen have all been dash threes with Combat Stocks. One was an ALA and one an ALB, from September and October of 1985 respectively.

It was also a Misprint in the standard catalog. There were more than 5000 of these, not 200. As verified by Earl Minot at Lew Horton. And also in the edit by the author of the standard catalog.

This is a 29-3 variant and I would not pay 1000 without the Combats as they run about 200-250 themselves.
