Just recently got lucky and scored this 3" 66 at a gun show. Model 66-4, serial # puts it made in '95. There is the number 299 stamped on the inside of the crane/yoke. I'm just curious if anyone may know if these are just assembly #s, or if it may be something else, possibly made for a dept. or? Any info/knowledge would be great, thanks.

Excellent pick up. Those grips are for shooting, I have a few pair.

Thanks, I read that during these years, some of these 66s came with Unkle Mike's from the factory. I didn't know that, this is the youngest S&W I own now. They do feel pretty darn good, although wood looks much better to me.

Very nice! The 3" looks to be the perfectly proportioned k frame revolver. Hopefully it didnt break the bank. Box too or as it sits? Either way hard to pass up!

Todd

Agreed, I've always liked K-frame snubs, and this feels superb also! It didn't come with a box, but that's ok. I found it on a table with a slightly unorganized, scratched up display case. It was amongst some inexpensive autos, and some magazines scattered about. I almost passed on it wearing the goodyears, but I leaned in and looked closer. Saw the 357 S&W magnum, shrouded ejector rod, and it looks longer then my 2.5" no dash 66. Then it hit me what it was! I asked to have a look, and give it a look over. More people started looking next to and behind me. I didn't put it down after I saw the small tag hanging... $475.00. I'm sure it was luck and timing, as this was at the end of the evening on a Friday. I was just browsing before leaving. I'm just lucky it was overlooked until that point. That was probably a fair price 20 years ago. I will likely never find a deal like that again!

Wow…Congratulations on that sweet deal. Beautiful 66.
People keep on knocking gun shows, claiming that there are no good deals to be found, you have proven that to not be true.
I too found a 3” 66-4 at a gun show for about what you paid for yours, but that was a few years back…bought it from a private seller.
If you don’t mind, could you share the serial # prefix? Mine is “CAA”

Thanks! This was a private seller also, and I agree about your thoughts on shows. Folks shouldn't give up. I have found, and have seen some nice pieces in the last several months at a couple of shows. Probably better in the last 3 months than the last 3 years of shows put together in my observation. By the way, serial prefix was "BSM".

Wow you did great. I love hearing the details too. Brings back memories of my own finds over the years. A pair of factory target stocks would sure look great on it. Hard to find in the round butt though. But even the Goodyears can't deflect from the appeal of that one!

Congrats, the M66-4 with 3" barrel is (IMHO) the best of the best when it comes to M66s.
I would not even selling mine for anything less than a four digit price range starting in 2 (not including any numbers behind the period.)

Mine is sporting Craig Spegel's boot grips in Macasser Ebony.... makes it look pretty good, eh!

My 3” 66-4 also came with em. It currently wears combats, but Uncle Mikes are my favorite synthetic grips.

Those combats look fantastic on yours! Thanks for sharing. I might have to keep an eye out for a set. I'm going to go ahead and see how it shoots, so I'll leave the goodyears for now. If i might ask, how do the combats feel when shooting 158gr. magnums?
