30-30 and cast bullets

SR4795???????????????

There is IMR 4895, SR 4756 and SR 4759, what are you talking about??????????????????

My favorite plinking load for the 30-30 uses a commercial cast 165-grain bullet over 7 grains of Power Pistol. Velocity is around 1130 fps, and the accuracy is better than it needs to be. A typical 50-yard target:

I ended up going for some trail boss but it was all gone. i did have a box of 170 speer hot cor i got at a gun show a while back. i picked up some imr 3031 and shot a few. i had my little guy with me so i was more looking after him that any thing else. when things get back to normal ill get back to looking at some cast loads

After all those years of shooting full loads of 30-30 and 30-06,it a plesant surprise to shoot the low velosity loads for a change.

First time,I used Unique and I shot at the 100 yard target,
waited, and waited and finally.........."Platt" as the bullet finally got to the paper target.

I do remember to use these cases, just for these loads, per a reloading book by Wooters, since they do not always expand and form to the rifles chamber and the possibility of soot on the case can happen. Don't know why,but I just follow the rules, since there must be a reason ?
I know that this page is for 30-30 but for a 30-06 and a 151gr 32 alloy #311466.....powders from RedDot to SR4756 can be used for 1697 to 1940 fps with only 35,000 to 39,400 cup.
2400,SR4759 and IMR4227 take twice as much powder but reach around 2450 fps at 42,000 to 48,100 cup.

These powders should work with the shorter case also, one would think............at about 70% of the payload. Maybe I will have to get my old 30-30 out this year for some lite loads.
later.

You need a gas check when the bullet is designed for one. Try shooting groups with and without the check and see which works best. Start off unchecked. Sometimes it works. Adding a gas check has never caused groups to be worse in my experience. I use a 170 gr. Lee flat point cast of air cooled wheelweights with the gas check in place at 1600 fps. The loads I use are with Red Dot or Unique as listed in the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook ( third edition ). But with the price of gas checks going through the roof maybe it would be wise to develope a load without one !

For a plinker load in my Sav. 170 pump gun I use the Lee 170 gr. RNFP cast from straight WW alloy gas check left off and two light coats of Lee Alox/JPW lube. I push it with 7.0 grs. of Alliant Red Dot,MV runs around 1250 fps. Works great in a Win. 94 as well.

Some data from the Lyman cast bullet manual #3.

Red Dot 6.5 grs. 1159 fps. 8.5 grs. 1348 fps.

Unique 7.0 grs. 1240 fps. 10.6 grs. 1555 fps.

SR-4756 7.0 grs. 1102 fps. 10.5 grs. 1423 fps.

W231 6.0 grs. 1175 fps. 8.0 grs. 1275 fps.

TiteGroup 4.5 grs. 960 fps. 6.5 grs. 1383 fps.

2400 7.0 grs. 1005 fps. 11.0 grs. 1377 fps.

Bullseye 5.0 grs. 990 fps. 7.4 grs. 1263 fps.

One of my more fun loads to shoot is the little Lee .314" 32 cal. 90 gr. tumble lube SWC cast from PB or 50/50 and tumble lubed once before and once after sizing down to .311" I push this little bullet in the 30-30 with 3.0 to 3.5 grs. Alliant Bullseye MV runs about 1000 fps. with the high end load. I shoot the same load in my 300 Sav. as well.

I have a big bag of 110 gr JSP almost like the plinker bullet. Use them in my 30 carbine.

What I would like to find is a load using a powder like Unique or Power Pistol rather than the traditional rifle powders that I use in the 223 Rem.

I have a lot more of the "pistol" type powder and seems I could use less of it for just range shooting.

I have no idea where to begin even trying to develop a load. The only data is for a heavier lead bullet using 7 or so grains of Unique.

Any ideas or links??

Ackley's handbook

Rule
Jellybean got me started in collecting some old books. So I looked it up.

P.O. Ackley's Handbook shows 2 loads for 110 gr bullet 30 M1 Carbine

13 gr 2400 - 1900 fps

&

14 gr 4227 1959 fps (est)

or where you looking for 30/30 loads?
Ackley has 21 gr 2400

don't know if these are powders you're considering. hope it helps

I was looking for 30/30 loads.I did just come across the 2400 load data. But that is around 31 grains for a 100 gr plinker. I am a handguner and used to 4-5 grains:D

There is one in one of manuals using Unique but it is a much heavier lead bullet.

I was just trying to save my 223 powders. Proably better off just to buy the heavy lead bullet and then use 7.5gr of Unique
I hate cleaning lead from rifles though. It's a Marlin micro.

There are a few tricks for Micro Groove bores since they have very shallow lands and wide grooves.

Use a hard bullet at least around 12 BHN or higher so it gets a better grip and doesn't skid on the shallow lands,a gas check bullet is a plus to help with that as well as help seal the bore.

Keep the MV around 1600 to 1800 fps.

Cast the bullet fat enough so it fills the grooves,a .310" dia. cast bullet is a good start as most 30-30 have big throats.
