I just bought a 300 AAC upper and I'm very pleased with it's performance (even though I can't get the "right" powder(s)) I've had no FTF/FTE) and accuracy is outstanding. My question concerns the horrible "four rail" handguard. Will I need a special wrench to remove that abomination from an otherwise excellent product? Is that handguard the product of S&W's engineering, or did someone else suffer from nightmares? Yes, I put rail covers on it.

When I bought it, I thought I could live with all the unnecessary rails - I wanted the "free float". I still like the "rifle", but am tired of putting on gloves to pop a coyote out the back door.

Remove the screws and pull it apart

How you remove the quad rail depends on what you want to replace it with. I am guessing you have the Blackout that looks just like the 15T model upper. Like Jrin21 said, to pull off the actual rail, remove the 4 hex head screws on the back side of the barrel nut. And if you find a handguard that uses the same barrel nut, it's that easy. If you choose a handguard that does not use the same barrel nut, you will need some AR designed tools. A upper receiver jig, some punches, and a armors wrench. You will have to remove the gas tube and gas block to remove the remove the barrel nut so you can replace it with one that works with the handguard that you want to use. It sounds hard, but it really isn't. Look on youtube for video's others have posted up about it. And by the way, happy first post, and How on earth did you join the forum in sept of 2012 and today is your very first post?

If they have a quad rail and it's a S&W .300BLK, it is SKU# 812012, It is not the standard GI nut. It basically is a ring with holes in it. It is the same rail used on later generations of 15T's. It is a S&W branded UTG rail.

Replace the GI nut from the one in your brand new Mid West Ind Gen 2 SS rail. The rail is slim and sturdy and can have short mounting points installed any where. This rail comes in 9 to 15" lengths

If you want an easy way out, just add snap on rubber rail covers. They come in a variety of colors and profiles and usually cost about $10/set off "the bay".
My (non-M&P) 300 blackout upper came with the same quad rail. These were UTG brand as I recall. The rifle feels fine now.
