It is basically a 338 win mag necked to 308. 30-338. Winchester sit on their hands to long and had to modify the case design on the 300 because of the 300 Norma mag

My step dad had a 30-338

Different cartridge. 308 Norma Mag is the equivalent to 30-338 Win Mag. from the 1950's on, pretty much put out of use when the 300 Win Mag came out in 1963.

The 300 Norma is about 15 years old. It is more like a 2.5" 416 Rigby necked down to 30 Cal. One of the guys I shot Long Range with had a custom bolt gun in this round.

I had a Barrett MRAD in 300 Norma; it’s the new military sniper round along with 338 Norma. The ammo is very expensive… Sig has a belt fed version. The most accurate/flat shooting round I’ve ever used.
