I've picked up some 300 grain Hornady XTP projectiles, and I'm loading some "fun" rounds. I'm the kind of guy who enjoys some good old fashioned recoil.

I've loaded 3 test runs of 6 rounds using HS6 and IMR 4227.

I've got 4 different kinds of powder. Titegroup, IMR4227, HS6, and 700X.

I've loaded up to 19 grains with 4227 and really liked them, and they were accurate in my 4" revolver.

Any suggestions on recipes that you liked as well? These are the first rounds of .44 Mag I have loaded, and they are way funner to shoot than factory rounds.

I've looked all over for Lil gun, H110, and 2400 locally and haven't found any as of yet. But I will keep looking.

Keep looking. H110 is hard to find, but I think that powder will give you the maximum velocity and recoil you are looking for.

On a side note... why are those 300 grain XTPs so darn expensive? I wanted to work up some loads with some, but when I saw how much more $$$ they were compared to the 240 grain XTPs, I left them on the shelf.

As my dad once told me, you want to play? You gotta pay.

I don't mind spending a little extra to make some fun loads to shoot once in a while. There are a lot worse things I could spend my fun money on.

The 300gr XTP mags are manufactured with an extra thick jacket vs. the standard XTP for use with higher 1600+ fps velocities. My 460XVR loves the 300 XTPM's . Too bad many of you are struggling to find H110 , I've had NO problem finding 110 and have about 10# , and that's a good thing cause my 300gr XTP load swallows about 41.8 gr of H110 each shot !!

Your IMR 4227 will give you pretty much what H110 does per Hodgdon data. I think you will find it as much as you need:D

I mean, how many are you really going to shoot for grins?:D

Just sold my SW 460 Mag 5". If I not hunting with it there is only so many heavy rounds I can take. It is brutal. I have a 45 Colt and no need to jack those up to Ruger only loads.

44 Mag with 240 gr lead bullets is fun

+1 on the 4227.
I don't think you can get enough powder in the case to go over pressure and yet you can get good velocity and amazing accuracy.
I use the WLP with it which is a hot regular primer for "regular and magnum" loads.
4227 is not supposed to need a magnum primer especially in that "short" 44 magnum case.
I also use 4227 in the 44 supermag with WLR primers (I drilled the brass for rifle primers).
It's a much under-rated powder IMHO.
