32/32 Kit Gun?

I know someone around here (Hondo?) has made .32 S&W Long Kit Gun.
I have a M-31-1, 4" and a J frame adjustable sight. Sure would like to hear from the voice of experience, or at least see a few photos, hopefully a close-up of the sight installation?
I'm espcially curious about the elevation adjustment stud in the top of the frame??

Hondo44 & I have talked about this idea several times in the past... I've got a late pre-War I-frame (32 Regulation Police) that has already been altered at least once. I've seriously considered (and been encouraged by Hondo44) a Kit Gun Project and when the wind is just right and the spirit moves me I guess I'll take out that J-frame adjustable rear sight, get a shorter barrel (like a 4") and have at it. I do like the idea quite a lot.

Too bad they didn't make more of the Model 631. These were 32 Magnum "kit" guns with 4 inch barrels. A blue one would have been great as well.

One question that comes up when considering your project is the need to have a higher front sight. If you just raise the sight blade, it starts to look a little ungainly, but adding a ramp or rib bring about their own set of challenges. I'll be interested in your solution to this aspect of the project.

I'm thinking of using an available pre-War barrel for mine that has a split lug to install a blade as needed, but as I say, it will need to be pretty tall, so that's giving me cause to pause.

The front sight height is part of the reason I looked for a M-31 with the slight barrel rib. The rib is similar to the Pre-34 in width and height. My plan is to install the rear sight (I have another alternative in mind I have yet to check out) then shoot and calculate just how high the front needs to be. I can make a .100" wide blade, maybe mill a slot and pin it. In my opinion, a round barrel would require a ramp sight.
Much is conjecture at this moment, why I am looking for pics and experience???
No offence scha but I have no interest in stainless steel, don't own any...

I've been thinking about that. Thinking ... maybe Bowen could do a cylinder and sleeve a barrel, or maybe a .32 S&W barrel might could be found. I've been thinking that a K-frame .32 H&R Magnum... ever how many rounds could be fitted to the cylinder. It'd be just about ideal for anything from the range to the woods/fields.

Then again, cylinders aren't marked for caliber, so if you have a nice K-32 barrel and a CF frame, and ream a K-22 cylinder... :rolleyes:

Steve, I think you may be onto something with that low rib idea. I don't know whether there is enough there to put a pin in, but if there is, it would sure take care of a major concern. Please keep us abreast of what you do with it. Maybe it will jog me off my lazy perch to get going on mine too! ;)

I think Hondo bought the 32 kit gun from gunbroker and did a few of his touches to it. Someone else added the sights. A 32 kit gun is a great idea as not to use the original 4" target guns, very collectable. Some have converted the 30 & 31's to 32 mag also, they are strong enough. Good project Steve, keep us informed on the progress. Froggie, let us see the results of yours also. Larry
 
I asked Hondo and he posted a pic with some info in another thread. I didn't preserve it and am more serious now that I have a project gun and sight. I have little interest in .32 Mag as I'm intrigued with the notion of shooting factory wadcutters.
I'm going to speak with David Clements about his pre-war rear sight as it may be low enough to use the original front?
 
David Clements has the gun to make a pre-war type rear sight and mill the frame to fit. He is about sure I"m going to need a taller front sight and I'm thinking about how to do that.
I'm sure this whole thing is going to take quite some time…

Following this thread with great interest. Please keep us posted. I have a donor model 30 that would be a great candidate for this type of conversion.
 
There are 2 - 4" 32's at the gun show I go to that would be great for this type of conversion. They are pre-war versions. I'm waiting cause they aren't selling and I'll make an offer in 3 weeks. The 30 & 31 would be better for me cause I'd probably make it 32 mag at some point. Larry
 
Hey Steve, here's a couple pics of the Andy Horvath K-22 converted to 32 long. The grips are Keith Brown Ropers. The bbl was cut to 5" to match the 5" ISP overrun K-38 I have. Front site base is an interchangeable Weigand base with a gold bead blade. Larry

Boy is that dandy! I especially enjoy the RM type front sight, 5" barrel contour and grips.
