Hi All, I'd like to make a correct period replica of a holster for 32 HE 1st model or so revolver. If you have one and can take pics or have any pics you've run across, please post them. I've Googled but not had much luck. Thanks

It is easier to just look for a period holster that the gun fits into instead of trying to determine exactly what holster was made of a 32 Model 1896. That period holster for small frame guns often had a flap closure designed as both police and civilian use, but some were open with a belt strap. Try to broaden your search to include any small frame revolver and look for the style of the day. Since S&W did not make holsters, you will probably never find one with "Model 1896" stamped on it, but a barrel length stamp was often used.

I have a couple flap holsters from that period or earlier as shown below that would most likely been one design used for this model. I would guess that the vast majority of 1896s were probably never in a holster, but rather a drawer or vest pocket.

Also, if you have any access to local gunshows, I've always found that bringing the gun I would like a holster for to the show an digging through the invariably present giant bins full of old holsters for one that fits it is a great way to find holsters.

Often these holsters are so old and decrepit that they are no longer functional. They are usually quite cheap, even if they are ok, but if they aren't functional any more you can often get them for a dollar or thereabouts.

You may find a mostly destroyed holster for next to nothing that acts as a fine pattern for a holster you want to make.
