I couldn't find a thread on the early I frames. Is there one on the forum? Spotted a 6" blued one at LGS at too high a price (I think, $1,200) based on condition, and have never seen one before. Anything I should know about this early model?

Lots of folks here like these. A 6" barrel in nice shape is not very common. I can't speak to the price, but I have seen prices rising on these. I just spent $800 on a 2" nickel 32 HE and It's not what I'd call pristine.. at $1200, I'd hope the box was there... Hondo44 is the go to guy for info on these..

Kinda what I was thinking too Robert. In very nice shape with a box...$1,200 seems fair. It had speckled/missing finish, iffy (uncleaned) bore. Seemed mechanically sound. I might see if they will take $600. Doubt it though. They had a 1 1/2 and some top breaks too. Bought out a collector. None of them in really great shape. In Granbury TX, so I found myself wondering if the 1 1/2 had ridden with General Granbury's cavalry in the Civil War.
Any Model 1896 is relatively uncommon to find for sale today. Only 19,112 were made, it is pretty certain that most are now gone, and maybe 20% of those that survived were 6". Personally, I watch for these and other S&Ws regularly for sale and find very few 6" 1896 revolvers. Unfortunately, due to the relatively unpopular caliber, 32 Long S&Ws have not gained much in value over the last many years. The 1st Model, however, is a very neat revolver, with a top frame cylinder stop that had not been used since 1881. It appears that only three have been for sale on GB in the last 3 months, while about 80 Model 1903s are either active or completed in the same timeframe.
Mine function great, and shoot very well.

IIRC, the 1-1/2 didn't come out until April of 1865 so it is
unlikely that any were carried by soldiers during the active
period of the Civil War.

Gary, thanks for your informative post. The link you mentioned didn't show up though....just a link to the image. I did try to search for 1896 (every post on this forum comes up) and of course 32 and first model are going to be very generic. If you could help with that link I'd appreciate it. The one in the LGS is just like your 6" only blued.

In my mind, when you put a proper ejector rod knob on these guns, it makes it look much better and increased value. I remember when no one was making knobs and 1896s without them sold way low. Now you can find the knob to put on these guns. I have a beater blued example that I put a new knob on.
There is a replacement on Jack First website, but it does not have the top screw. You would have to use some blue thread locker to make sure it does not come loose. There is also a member who used to make them complete with the locking screw in the end, which is where I got mine a few years ago, but lost his contact information. Maybe someone has it??

Does anyone know if the ejector knobs for the I frame 32HE are the same as for the K frame 'first model' 32-20 HE? I have stumbled across a K frame with a missing knob. For clarity, I'm discussing the first model K frame that does not have the forward locking lug.
