.32 Long Ballistics

A follow up to my earlier posts. At the suggestion of Buffalo Bore I polished the chambers of my 432 a bit (felt drum with Flitz, spun in a flexible-shaft Foredom tool) and the BB +P JHP loads extract normally now. The little gun is quite a kicker with these loads, but no worse than a 158g +P 38 in an Airweight.

BB also advised that any of their H&R Mag loads are OK to use without limit in the 31-1 that I had reamed from 32 Long to H&R chambers. That's a 3" steel gun, and should be a bit more comfortable to shoot with these hot loads. Especially with the Pachmayr Compacs that are on it at the moment. I'm hoping to check it out, and get some chrono data, next week or so.

My first 32 was a Detective Special in 32 New Police (same as 32 Long without Colt having to say "S&W" on the barrel.) In direct response to the original question, if I wanted to carry that gun without having the chambers extended, I certainly would use one of the Buffalo Bore loads. I'm not aware of any other ammunition that will come close to the energies BB offers in 32 Long.

A couple of questions. Can you still shoot .32 Long if you have the cylinder reamed? And what are the possibilities of finding another cylinder for a M31-1? And last but not least, how do I get ahold of the gentleman that does the reaming? Thanks for all the answers, I don't reload, but it showed me another way to go to get results. Thanks, Semper Fi

Yes you can still shoot 32 long in a 32 H&R cylinder.

The 32 H&R is just longer than the 32 long.

Sort of like you can shoot 38 special in a 357 magnum gun.

You can find 31-1 cylinders on ebay from time to time.

Midway USA may even have new ones available.
