32 long

I inherited a 32 long OTG, 4 screws, rounded wood butt, serial # 332359. I live in Cleveland, Ohio and would like to get a fair price for it. I haven't seen any pictures that match up exactly with mine. Can anyone tell me anything about it and if there is any interest? 6 inch barrell

the "OTG" is "CTG" and means "cartridge." Value depends on condition. Post some pictures and we can give your a good estimate. Ed.

Welcome to the forum!
Your revolver is actually a .32 Hand Ejector 3rd Model (pre war WW II), chambered for the .32 S&W Long CTG (cartridge).

Made in the early 1920s based on the s/n and a little more scarce than most with the 6" barrel. All I can say is $50 to $350 based on your post without any description of its condition or a photo which would greatly help narrow down the value.

OK, now we're talkin'! That is indeed a round butt 32 HE with the sort of rare 6" barrel. Mostly we see that with the square butt Regulation Police and Regulation Police Target variants. It is a five screw as you count the one in front of the trigger guard in addition to the four on the side plate. I've been campaigning for calling the first I-frames "six screws" to denote that they have a strain screw at the front bottom of the grip frame to engage the flat mainspring (and absent on the "Improved I-frame.")

As to value, yours is going to be harmed by the finish condition, but if otherwise in good shape should bring between $150 "friends & family" price and a top of about $250 or so to somebody buying it to shoot.

I own a couple of the RPs and a Target, but not the round butt version. I've shot the first RP I bought more than the other two, but feel like they all would stand up to a near-unlimited diet of the mild S&W Long loads that I've concocted for them. In fact, if I ever get off my duff and get a good wadcutter load (for the swaged HBWC bullets I have and the WC mould I bought, I should be able to shoot them forever. Assuming yours doesn't have problems not visible in the picture and that it carries up and locks up as it should, you should be able to shoot factory loads and factory equivalent reloads with absolute impunity.

Unfortunately, Project 616 has gotten me a little distracted (OK, a lot distracted) and the HEs and RPs at the Lily Pad are getting a lot of neglect these days. Of course, at this rate, they'll never wear out!!

Those values must be pre-gun control paranoia. I have been looking for more 32 HEs and find that most are now selling at auction for $250-$300 range, even with the condition the OP has posted. I frames are in good demand now and I think the 6" barrel will now bring near the high end of my estimate. Nice honest untouched condition with very smooth metal. The wood grips will bring $100 by themselves, since most round butt I frames had hard rubber.

Forgot to mention that without the MADE IN USA frame stamping, it is pre-1922.

Let me know if you do get this one. We still need to get together for a meeting of the Andy Horvath Admiration Society. Maybe we can start out shooting the S&W Longs and work up through the H&R "almost-Magnums" to the 327 Fed Mags. I am looking forward to seeing your recreated Model 16 and I guarantee you'll get a thrill out of Project 616. Of course those old I-frame 32 HEs in the armory are a lot of fun too.

Norcoast, I can guarantee that Larry will give that old I-frame a good home. He loves the 32s almost as much as I do!

Froggie, would you have any idea, going back in time, when the metalurgy allows for rechambering these .32 S&W Long's for either the H&R or the Federal? Just wondering. Also have a Model 19 sitting around not doing much these days!

Well Stu, I wouldn't even consider rechambering any I-frame to 327 Fed Mag... I just don't think there's enough beef there. Even if you could shoot factory stuff in it (and I wouldn't even do that) I'm afraid some of the reloads I'm making would make it come unglued.

As far as strength, if I read SCSW (and additions from friends Hondo44 & DCWilson) correctly, anything after about 1920-25 or so is heat treated about as well as the last true I-frames in 1950-51. I'm not sure I would convert any of them to even H&R "almost-Mag" because of what you could to with reloads. I'm the old (not bold) reloader, but the temptation to hotrod the cartridge would probably prove too strong for me.
