.32 mags in a Model 30?

I thought that I was right. It makes the response on another thread "Why would anyone want a Model 683 instead of a Model 30 a mystery.

K frame pistols can be converted to .32H&R Magnum at a reasonable price. This doesn't hold true for the J frames, however.

Dave

In 1961 when J frame production began for the model 30 & 31, the cylinder length was increased from 1.25" to 1.38". The 631 has a cyl length of 1.40". The difference between the two cyls is 20 thousandths of an inch (.020"). I am guessing that a .32 H&R mag round is less than 1.38" overall loaded length...if so, a $300 model 30 or 31 can be modified to fire 32 H&Rs. One can then save the $500 that he would have spent on a model 631, and buy yet another S&W with it!

So by modifying the chamber, would you mean taking a drill bit to it to "deepen the chamber" to accomodate the longer 32 Mag cartridge case? I mentioned in another post that I have never seen a model 30 except on the web.

Well, a drill bit might be a tad on the "shadetree mechanic" side of doing things properly, but the general idea is to "deepen" the chamber to allow 32 H&Rs to drop in. As for model 30s (and 31s for that matter, which is just a square butted 30), they can be found on GunBroker quite often. I had up to 6 of them at one time, all gotten off Gunbroker near the $300 mark.

Piloted chamber reamer is what you need. You can rent them from online sites.

I understand there is a more technical tool used for this purpose. However I am counting angels on pinheads at this moment waiting for a trouble call (computers break a lot here in Iraq). S&W forum is my life line to all things fun in the world!!

I saw a M-30-1, a blue three incher, in a dealer's case a few years ago. The chambers had been lengthened to accept the .32 H&R Mag. The gun looked new, basically as pristine as you see them, so I don't know if the person that modified it ever shot it with the longer, more powerful round, and it certainly had been shot so little if at all as to tell us nothing about the durability of such a conversion.

Take care over there, Peyton!

I know what you mean. I did 2 years in Kosovo and 3 in Afghanistan. The Forum helped keep me sane (relatively).

That dust do mess up them 'puters!

I have a Pre-30, on an Improved I Frame shipped in Jan 1953. I would be concerned regarding pressures of the 32 mag in this age piece. What to you think. It is in great shooting shape and very accurate. 32 mag would elevate it to a reasonable carry piece, but am concerned about the pressure.

The cyl on your pre-30 is too short to chamber 32 mags...1.25", versus 1.38" when model 30 production went to the J frame.
