In my looking at .32s I find that I can get a LNIB Model 432PD or a LNIB Model 30, 30-1 for approximately the same price. Seeing them both in person where I live would probably not happen. I'd like some thoughts on which one might be the better buy looking at the long term. I'll mostly shoot .32 longs but I know the 432PD will give me the Magnum cartridge also.
Thanks for any opinions.

If the price is right (around $500 in my opinion) I'd probably buy them both. If can only buy one I'd go for the 432PD for something to carry and shoot. For something to add to the collection, maybe shoot occasionally at the range, and hope for some appreciation over time, the Model 30. Good luck.

They are both the same size.

The 432PD is aluminum and therefore lighter.

As you said, the 432 can shoot 32 H&R magnum as well as 32 long.

The 432 has an internal lock.

The 432 has a shrouded hammer, whereas the 30-1 hammer is exposed letting you shoot single action if you want.

The 30-1 is all steel, older, and 32 long only. It's heavier, but not by all that much. Probably about 19 oz.

I have a 431PD which is the exposed hammer version of the 432PD.

Plus I have a 31-1 -- the square butt version of the 30-1.

I think the 432 would be a better carry gun for self defense. The shrouded hammer, more powerful cartridge, and lighter weight are in it's favor.

I used to carry my 31-1, but switched to the 431PD right after I got it.

But the 31-1 is more fun at the range, and I can shoot it better. For range shooting I prefer the 32 long as it's cheaper, and seems more accurate in my hands.

Plus, I really like J frame square butts as they fit my hand better.

So, which to buy, depends on what you plan to do with it.

i have a 431PD...carry it every day in my pocket. Never had an issue with snagging of the hammer...I have carried a charter arms 38 special for years too and it has a hammer so i'm used to drawing them both with no issues.. Keep Hornady critical defense in mine as it has about the same ft'lbs of energy as 38 special (not plus p) . The 431PD is an awesome pocket gun and the 432PD would be as well. I like to shoot SA sometimes so i prefer the 431. can't go wrong with either

It is my understanding that the model marked Model 30 & 31 has a cylinder long enough to be reamed out to take the 32 H&R Magnum and many have done it with great success. I have 2 Pre 30's and a couple of older 32 Hand Ejectors which are unfortunately not long enough to do it.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that the model 30 is infinitely cooler than all of those other guns. Hopefully you aren't considering a "LNIB" gun for concealed carry. The other one is better for concealed carry, but the model 30 would show people that you're an actual S&W guy.
