I'm new here and not much of a S&W guy (I only have one).

It is a 33-1 5 shot 4" barrel blued. Perfect blue except right at the muzzle, there is faint wear from going into the leather holster it has been in.

I got this revolver when a local Hardware / sporting goods store went under around 1973 or somewhere about there. It was the last firearm laying there and I couldn't let it just sit there. The guy gave it to me I think for around $75.

I think the ser# is R595XX

Not sure of the exact year it was made and if it is rare or how much it's worth. No intention of selling, but for insurance purposes.

It's in very good condition with only 5 rounds through it before cleaning and oil and put away years ago.

I'm not an expert but the R serial prefix started in 1969.
The 33-1 began J frame production in 1961 and was discontinued in 1974.
It should be caliber .38 S&W
The SCSW lists the value at ANIB $400 EXC $300 and VG $235.
I'm sure the real experts will chime in soon.

pulled it out and took a couple photos. I hadn't noticed, but the grips got messed up a little.

The grips on this side are perfect. The photo looks like something is wrong, but I think it is glare or something. This side is fine.

Last year I gave $375.00 for one new in the box, not sure of the year but it had the diamond center grips on it makeing it 1961 to 1966. Hope this help's.

I have one just like it and the serial number is R47006. It was shipped in August of 1971. I don't think that pistols was pretty new when you bought it around 1973. I believe the Model 32 also used the R serial number range as well. Of course, S&W never releases pistols in perfect serial number sequence, so the is just an educated guess.

I'm assuming by "new" you mean the model number. The pistol itself was brand new in the box when I got it.

I don't know how long the store selling it might have had it and I am not exactly sure it was 1973 when I got it. Maybe a little earlier. I just don't know.

What surprises me is, it is in as good a shape just rattling around as much as it has all these years. It's in my safe these days.

Yes, I meant that the pistol itself was new when you bought it. I didn't know it was NIB when you bought it. It might have been sitting around the hardware store for a year before you bought it, so I don't think it is any older then 1972. That's just a guess.
