I took the 34-1 to the range. It took me a bit to try and figure out how to hold the darn thing since I am used to K and N-frame guns. I don't want to change the grips because this gun is going to be what my wife learns on and it fits her just right. Shoots really well though once you learn exactly how to manipulate those tiny grips.

I watched the Jerry Miculak clip on U-Tube recently on how to grip a revolver. He recommends a radically different grip for J-frames, which I suppose, would include the 34. He recommends that, instead of locking one thumb with the other along the side of the frame, as is done typically with larger frame revolvers, the shooter should wrap the supporting hand thumb around the base of the shooting hand thumb, behind the grip and use supporting hand pressure to lock the shooting hand to the frame. I've never tried it, but I certainly intend to soon. The man knows what of he speaks.

Grips on J-frames are always a decision between "enough grip to hold well/repeatably" and "packability." A 4" 63 with Pachmyers on it is a lot easier to shoot well than one with service type grips, but gives up some compactness. You pay your money and take your choice, or try to work out some reasonable compromise.

I will soon be in possession of my first 2" M-34, and will have to solve this dilemma again, complicated by the short barrel factor.

BTW m17, beautiful grips on your 34!

David,

You can see your wife shoot and I can't, but I am very skeptical. Is it possible that the gun fits her hand well and feels fine, but her finger would be positioned better on the trigger with a Tyler T-grip added? If you've already checked out which part of her index finger contacts the trigger in SA, then ignore this post. If not, you might want to check it out and consider a Tyler. You'd probably like it, too. And it's easier to add and subtract a Tyler than a whole set of grips.

I absolutely hated my Model 34 for years after I bought it becaise of the small grip.

It is the only gun my Wife will shoot (it's "her's" now). I bought it around 1980 and ended up installing a Pachmyr, which was an improvement. I just don't like them much.

A couple of years ago I put the original grips back on with a Tyler T-grip. What an incredible improvement. I have small hands and the T-grip has been my "go to" solution for everyhting from J frames to N frames ever since. In fact, I bought another Model 34 (same gun, 4" SB) this year for myself for $350 with box and papers.

I do like the look of those Miculek style grips in the photo above though.

These are not pretty but they are a good option . Round to square butt conversion and under 10 bucks from CDNN .What a plus, they fit the hand great and point good. This is a mod 60 J frame. These work well for me.
