34 years ago today The King passes

I've been thinking about that too, and was considering a thread on it. Still listen to his music. My favorite is "My Way", the version he did at his last concert.
I hate August 16th for that reason, but more than that, it was the day my Grampa died in 1980.
RIP

Today is know locally as Dead Elvis Day. Lots of strange tourists in Memphis this entire week...
It's also my sister's birthday. Kind of ruined things for her - She was a big fan of The King.

Several of us used to ride motorcycles down US 51 after working 4-12. Someone would always yell out as we passed Graceland - Mick Jagger is the real king of rock and roll!

Back when Elvis was alive you could go by Graceland at 3 AM, in any weather, and there would be people standing out by the gate. He'd be in Las Vegas and there would still be people out there by the gate. Waiting for who knows what.
Weird....

It was 34 years ago today that The King, Elvis Presley, died. Say what you will, he was one of a kind. Perhaps not the greatest ever but he was one talented dude. I doubt anyone can deny that. The acting sure did leave a lot to be desired though.

When I got the news I was standing on the second floor balcony of one of the buildings at Ridgecrest Conference Center. My future wife was about to get off work from the gift shop. I'd put on my best pair of overalls and a nice shirt! We were looking forward to going out and about to see the sights. She walked out to tell me what she'd heard on the radio. We were both shocked. Still sad for many people.

What a great entertainer he was. Our very own Tennexplorer is probably standing in front of Graceland today hawking his glow in the dark elvis statues.

I worked in a record store when I heard he died. The next day and beyond we sold every record of his and people wanted more. Just recently I realized how young he was. Something like 42, I think? There's that truckstop cafe in Sparks Nv. that has about three walls covered with his guns including tons of commemoratives. My favorite movie was Roustabout. RIP E.

I was at Disneyland with my then wife and four kids. What should have been an exciting day was almost ruined by seeing so many, men included, crying out loud or walking around teary eyed as the word traveled around Disneyland. It reminded me of the day when President Kennedy was assassinated and the day of his funeral seeing many people crying in public.

I actually got to see him in concert when I was very young. I was sitting in the den of the folks house when I saw the news he had died.
I loved most all of his songs...but I gotta say Buddy Holly was the King of Rock & Roll

He may not have been the "greatest" singer, but he was the best entertainer ever. The man could put on a hell of a show. Ask anyone who tried to get a ticket to Vegas shows or any other concert. Toughest ticket in town. The women loved the guy, no doubt about it.

I was never an Elvis fan. But he was a veteran, and for that I salute him.

Ok, i'll admit it too, I enjoy Elvis' songs; liked the early country he did and rock songs.

While I liked the Gospel songs themselves he sang in later years, I didn't like his interpretation.

Every week or two, I put on a record of his. Good stuff.

I can't believe how many people seem to think Elvis is dead. He pumps diesel at the big truck stop in Wendover NV, and sometimes sings in the lounge there on "open mike night."

I know for a fact this is true. Cause I read it in "The Weekly World News".

bk43,

I had no idea the date of death, but my wife has always to go to Graceland, and so we went today. She was thrilled and I was glad to take her.

I enjoyed BB King's House of Blues more than I enjoyed Graceland.

So on to Chicago to see the Cubs and White Sox this weekend.

snip......The acting sure did leave a lot to be desired though.

I think he was a lot better of an actor than many realize. The movie roles he was cast in did leave much to be desired. Most all of them were contracted by Colonel Parker and the studio brass to capitalize on his singing, with no real meat or plot to things. As I have read, Elvis was never happy with the movies he made and always hoped for better roles. All his movies did make a profit though. That's not something too many other actors can say about their acting career.

Interesting. I was going to put "How Great Thou Art" in the thread but I struggled with that because the way he did it seemed to evolve over the years. I didn't know which interpretation would be best to represent his work. So I just took the easy way out and went with "American Trilogy".

I have to admit the man really had a way with gospel music. Kinda' like the Statler Brothers, it's just that next step above the way it is when lesser talents do it.

you should be very appreciative of the "weird tourist"they have through the years boosted the economy of memphis by millions

I watched a bio on TV about Elvis on his early years. Then went out and ran errands listening to Elvis.

I liked his music more after his passing simply because it was then that I seriously paid attention to his music.

I have always felt that his life was strange though, almost as if he was from another world.
