.35 cal Auto question

I am in the process of cleaning helping a widow sell the last of her husbands collection. One of the remaining pieces is a 35 auto. I pull the slide back to make sure that the chamber is clear and the slide will not return to battery.
Is there a trick that I am missing here?

If you are using the left side slide release button to retract the slide you will also need to press it back in when going forward to go into battery. Hope this helps
