100 rounds through my 351 PD today. Its a fun little gun. i can put a quick cylinder of 7 rounds into about a 2 inch group at 7 yards as there is zero recoil. Thats gotta hurt a would be assailant. Only issue is it shoots a little high with the hi-viz sights. Does anybody have any rounds chronographed out of this gun?

Love mine too. note the different lots in the TNT. Finish on mine is worn, and it shoots high and right

Thanks wired. Looks like +V is the right carry round as i don't think there is much difference in bullet weight so i need velocity. Whats the bullet weight on those do you know? The Supreme looks goood too. What do you carry in yours ?

I've been using the CCI Maxi-mag V HP in my 351PD. Bullet is 40 grain.

Fun little gun.

CCI Maxi-mags shoot dead-on at 7 yards in my 351. They tend to do just as well as the TNT and +V on the occasional jack rabbit I manage to hit, no idea how that would translate to larger animals...

Maxi Mag 40 Gr. HPs provide about 119 ft. lbs. of muzzle energy; Win. Supreme 34 Gr. HPs about 112 ft. lbs. but much better penetration. The third best is Win. Super X 40 Gr. FMJs with about 107 ft. lbs. and pretty good penetration.

Take your choice.

I carry two snake shot followed up with five Supremes.

My 351 also hits a little high and right if held normally. Gotta use a choke hold.

Rams thanks for the data. why do you think the penetration is better with the winchester supremes?

cometpx4, the Supremes penetrate very well because their velocity from a 351, combined with their sold construction, does not cause a lot of expansion. At rifle velocities, they expand just fine.

My tests show that from a 351, nothing comes close to the penetration of Supremes. Win. Super X 40 Gr FMJs, Rem. Premier 33 Gr poly tips, and Maxi Mag + P 30 Gr HPs are tied in a distant second group. Maxi Mag 40 Gr HPs are not very far behind that second-place group.

Remember, we are talking about penetration only, and then only at the relatively low velocities from a 351.

Energy dump is a different matter. Even the cheaper, slower, good old Win. Dynapoints expand and dump energy well, but at the cost of about 43% less penetration than Supremes.

I like deep penetrating, bone breaking Supremes for carry (rabid critters/wild dog size protection), although Maxi Mag 40 Gr HPs might be the best compromise (energy and penetration) for a carry round.

Just my two cents based on a lot of testing with phone books. ( A friend delivered phone books a few years ago and had almost 100 books left over.

Good info RAMS
I carry Supreme also, but never really tested them like you did.
How about reduced loads? I am looking to reduce the noise, wear and tear. I have a 317, but wife is hiding it from me.

"How about reduced loads?"

I'm not aware of any being made currently, except, of course, the 45 Gr CCI (and sometimes Winchester) WRF loads, which are just a little louder than HV LRs. About like Stingers, I would guess. I've shot WRFs but never tested them.

Someone on this board may have velocity info.

You know, so many people either did not know or have forgotten Border Patrolman Bill Jordan, author of "No Second Place Winner." In his book, written long before "unobtainium" and the Model 351, Jordan, who was carrying a modified Model 37 off-duty or for back up, theorized that an Airweight Chief's Special in 22 Magnum with allow cylinder would be a great gun for such purposes.

Apparently, S&W does not have anyone in marketing who has read Jordan's book, or they would realize that they are missing a pretty cool way of marketing the Model 351. In fact, "period" background and so forth plus the quote from Jordan's book would make a great ad, reminiscent of the current ads running for the Classic series revolvers.

You have a really cool revolver!
