357 Mag 150 grn KT over 11.5 grns 4227

Dollar to a donut . Use a mag primer & load 1gr off max . Will burn cleaner , spreads will be reduced , accuracy will be pretty dang good .

and with these slow burning powders, for top FPS, give a heavy lead bullet all the crimp you think will be safe, in you loads.

Proved this with a lead 158 in my little J frame, snub nose.

Very Disappointed in the 13 grn performance in both Mdl. 19 6" and Trooper 6". More unburnt powder than the 11 grn load, oh well may load 11 1/2 grns to try next week.

I am looking at your bullet in post #18. I use a bullet like that and you said you had 2400 powder. 12 grains is a target load in mine. That bullet will do good in 38 brass with 2400 also. Lee has data for the low side. Are you putting lube on with your fingers in post #18? Without a gas check it will print better below 950fps.

Lubed as sized, RCBS KT 150 grn. Been casting, sizing and shooting them since mid 70's, no leading in any revolvers. Also cast size and lube 148 grn WC, looking for flat nose HBWC mold for Colt Mid Range. Would like to shoot more but issues with upper spine and arthritis…

Zero still makes those for .$94.00 per 1000. --Good pricing for a quality bullet. I still have some 3D hbwc's I bought years ago. Your Colt should have a 1 in 14'' twist and should make a wad cutter come alive but you will have to use a faster powder like Bullseye-Unique-231-hp38-700x-American Select-or so. Hbwc's will only work under 750fps.

In my 686 6" with a 38 case I got:
11.0 grs at 888fps

with a 357 case and the 158 Lswc
12 grs at 976fps.............. back on 6/7/2014

These loads had a moderate crimp added to the case, std cci primer.

Well...

I also lucked out on SP primers, regular and Mag, using mag. with 4227 and 2400, my 19 6" loves them all.

Well, if it is not the primers could it be the powder? How old is it and have you tried it in another reliable (proven?) load/caliber? Maybe something in 44 Magnum?

Using 13 shouldn't be worse than 11.5 with a powder that seems to perform better closer to MAX than MIN...?

Cheers!

Powder is old but has been stored in climate controlled room. I loaded 50 rnds 357 Mag 150 grn KT SWC using 13 grns of old 2400, 38 Spl. 148 grn button nose WC with 4 grns of Unique and 38 Spl. 150 grn. KT SWC with 4.2 grns. Unique. Went shooting today and only shot 38 Spl. in my Trooper as shot few other 45's. May try and find some jacketed 357 bullets to load with the old 4227 , it will probably be fine. Anyway my right eye is not good, waiting until 1st of next month to go back to eye specialist and see whats what.

I never used 4227 in the .357 Magnum. I'm told it's much more suited for the .44 Magnum.

I have used most every other slow powder in the .357 like W296/H110, 2400, AA#9, 300MP and Lil'Gun. I think Enforced is the only one I missed.

I got my best results with Lil'Gun but it seems to generate extremely high temps so I won't use it in my revolvers. I do use it with 180gr bullets shot from my levergun. For handguns I like W296 and 2400.

The RCBS KT 150? A SWC bullet.

If that is the bullet, it is my go-to for all things 36/357, found nothing better for ME. If not what you were talking about, disregard but the comment is still true.

My favorite for years, plinking, IPSC, and what have you bullet, cast from what I hoped was close to Lyman#2, on my Coleman camp stove, using the pan and goooey red lube and a "Kake Cutter" in the kit I bought.
I have a couple hundred, made before I quit casting. No commercial caster offers the bullet, or I would order a bunch!
