anyone using aa#5 w/158 hard cast 158 lswc bullet ? looking for a midrange load. thanks.

I like it a lot in top end 38 Special but have not used it in the mag. Go to the Accurate website and check their stats.

I've used AA#5 with 158gr lswc for .357 mag. with good results, but Bullseye works better for me for mid-range accurate loads.

AA-5 works good in the 357, but if you want good hot loads look to AA-7, or AA-9.

I use AA#5 in hot .38 Special +P rounds. It's accurate and it delivers good velocity. I see no reason why it won't work well in a mid-range lead Magnum round.

Edit to fix goof-up ! LOL

Where on the burn rate chart does the AA#% fall?

I've only chrono'd one AA5 load in 357. 8.1gr with a WSP under a 158lswc for 1062fps out of a 4" Mdl 66. AA5 is my powder of choice for 44mag midrange loads (great in 45Colt, too), but I use AA2 in most other handgun calibers.

I use AA-5 in 40 loads, and I do get a gold residue on the shooting bench.

Those little pieces of "gold" under an ejector star are a real problem in a revolver. I had a friend that had a M66 and he used AA#5 in some lighter target loads, bad, real bad!

He got the cylinder shut but it wouldn't turn! It's been so long ago that I can't remember how he got it open and cleaned. He did, I just don't remember how.

It is better when loading up towards the top of the data.

For me, AA2 and AA5 leave more grit but less soot than similar powders. The grit is, I believe, a filler. Isn't a problem as long as I stay above published starting loads.

I have the same experience with AA5 residue - yellow gritty stuff which gets under the ejector star. I have some loaded in .45 Colt which I will shoot and not do that again. I am going to try it again in the 9mm and bump the load up near the top end. Residue is not really all that bothersome in the auto as I can blow it out with the air compressor.
