357 Unique ??

Guys, anyone have a load for a 357 magnum using unique powder with a 150 grain RN coated bullet ??

6.0 grains is a nice load with a 158 LSWC and should work well for you.

I have been loading 5.5 grains of unique under 150-160 grain lead bullets for decades.

It should be just fine.

Standard primers will be fine. I only use magnum primers for H110 loads.

Used to load wad cutters in 357 cases. Don't remember the numbers but I had a lot of fun and brass lasted forever.

Reloading is not like putting a kids bike together..it is one of those tasks that you do need to read and study the instructions carefully...for safety's sake.

The best approach is to read the upfront sections of several reloading manuals, find several sources of load data and the very best load for you and for now uses the starting powder charge weight in the manual.

After you've assembled a few and shot them, assemble a few more with 0.2 grains more of powder ....shoot them ....and then slowly work your charge weight up in increments, to what your gun likes....but do not go over maximum charge weights.

I just tried to find load data for a 150 grain RN using Unique.

Alliant and Lyman do not list any data....

Where did you get those bullets?
It might help tracking down a good starting charge weight and COL.

I did find a 150 grain cast #358430...#2 alloy in Lyman's 45th edition using unique

Suggested Starting grains....4.0 grains
Max 8.0 grains

That's a large spread
But still, start low and work up

For 357 Mag I've been using a 6.0 Gr Unique/158 Gr LSWC bullet recipe for 30 years. Very accurate in everything and easy on the gun and shooter. Even my little 340 PD likes them.

Using data from the next biggest bullet wil work. There are tons of loads for 158 RN bullets.
5.5 to 6.0 Unique will work and is probably be just as good as anything else in that range. Not the fastest load but accurate and easy to shoot

The std load for 158gr swc is 7.0 grs of Unique . It's been a std load ever since I started reloading , that's been a few yrs ago . I have shot a lot of them over time . When Unique became " unavailable " the last several years I switched powders for my mid range mag loads and haven't looked back .

Finer that frog hair! Standard primer, 357 brass, 4" barrel, 860 fps chronoed.

What Cowboy said! 7.0 has worked for years. 8.0 was always max.

That's the .357 load I have always used for lead bullets.

From 6.0 to 8.0( max.) grains of Unique are the standard loads with the 150 grain RN cast bullet. For top end loads in my S&W and Ruger Blackhawk , I settled on 7.5 grains as the best . Accurate without undue wear and tear on the guns.
