357mag 158gn HornadyXTP recomended powders

For 357, 10mm and 44 magnum, I only load full power ammo so the XTP bullet in 357, H110 all the way. In fact, I prefer the 125 gr XTP and 22 grains of H110 out of a securtiy six, model 28 or 686 - right about 1900 FPS. If I want tammer shooting, I switch to 38 special in my 19s, 44 special in my 29s and 40 S&W out of my 10s. Just some fuel for thought.

I have used AA #9 for medium .357 Magnum loads. As said earlier, it meters very well and burns cleanly. However, it’s not suitable for 9mm Luger or .38 Special.

AA#7 is my favorite powder for 9mm Luger target loads Clean, consistent and accurate. Looking at AA manual Edition 3.5, I see AA #7 loads for 9mm and .357 Magnum but not regular .38 Special. In my Hornady manual, I see Power Pistol loads for 9mm and .38 Special but not .357 Magnum.

Since you already have H110 for full house .357 Magnum, Power Pistol might be an acceptable choice for all 3 cartridges. It’s also quite good for +P .45 ACP. These days it really depends upon what you can lay your hands on.

158 XTP and a lot of H110.
It’s a MAGNUM. It’s no sissy pistol. If You don’t want flash or blast shoot 38s. (Who shoots without hearing pro?)

And if you don’t already have one, get a Garmin Xero. They’re only $600. And then you will know what’s going on.

I still like Unique..Herco too. For top end mags 296/H110 and L'il Gun. very seldom shot XTPs... a lot of Nosler 158s and 180s

Am using V V N110 with Hdy 158 xtp's. As always, check various sources but my pistols really like 14.0 grains N110 under 158 xtp using a Fed 100 primer. Not quite the velocity of H110, but noticeably less blast/concussion and using it as a target load. if memory serves, less than 1100 fps from 4 inch M28

Unique or 2400 will get you what you want but they’re virtually impossible to find these days. I’ve been using AA#9 with the 158 gr XTP with excellent results. I use a full load and that’s getting me 1300 fps in a 4” revolver and 1859 fps average in a 19” Marlin carbine. Reduce it a bit and you’ll be right in that upper “midrange” area.j

The basic formula is to use a powder that'll operate in the upper margin of pressure for the velocity desired.
In your case, AA7, HS6, Longshot, Auto Comp, or CFE pistol should all get you there

I use 2400....

I would take a hard look at CFE Pistol. It's a tiny bit slower than Unique and Universal, meters like water, and has copper fouling remover built in...CFE stand for copper fouling eraser.

It doesn't quite get to the top as well as H110/W239, but it's plenty of wrist shock for me.

I find it leaves a yellow/gold colored powder all over me and my gun. I'd be interested in hearing about some more modern powders that might do a good job in getting higher loadings for the .357. I'm not likely to change. I don't shoot a lot of top loads nowadays and go with about 12.5 gr. of 2400. I can get near that with some other powders.

The best is 2400 ...
If you can't find 2400 ... look for AA#9 , AA#7 , Power Pistol , H110
or N110 ... any of these slower powders do just fine .

In my youth I did 2400. As a Senior Citizen I use Unique when available so for me I like the BE-86 as a substitute. Easier to manage the recoil basically a mid-range load instead of a full power load.
