I have a chance to pick up a 36-1, s/n 16J998, 3" barrel. It's in nice shape, not pristine but not a boat anchor either. Looks solid to me, clean bore, been used but not abused. Grips match s/n.
What might be a fair price to pay for this one? When was it made?
Thanks for your thoughts.

Made either 1971 or 1972**. Could be anywhere between $300-550 depending on where you are in the country and how much "curb appeal" it has to the market audience. I would expect $375-425 somewhere.

**All J-frame revolvers having "J" serial numbers ranging from 1J1 to 999J99, the so-called "Floating J" numbers, were made 1971-72.

All things being equal, I'd say it shipped in 1971.

Is it a round or square butt?

Hard to say on price, but only based on your description I'd say $400 range would be okay.

I paid about $500 for mine several years ago.

But that was in California where the supply is very limited.

Pristine condition.

Some may say the squarebutt takes away from the value a little. To me it may actually balance the 3” heavy barrel better. I’d say from your description, anything below $400 is a very good buy. I wouldn’t pay over $500 unless it is an absolute must have for you.
