Just picked up a 37 no dash 3in with serial no 3J31XX it has a pinned barrel and non diamond stocks with matching serial number. None of the reference books I looked at list such a weapon. Any ideas of year of manifacture.

No good answer but maybe more confusion.
SCSW lists the 3" rb & sb as 1984-1986 under "product codes and features by year" (pg 211)
Pg 210 under "engineering and production changes" lists 3" barrel deleted from catalog in 1988.
My 3" sb has a S/N prefix of AAM which should be 1982, spec ord code is 3045.

I have a 37 no dash with a 3" barrel just like yours.
Your serial number is during the "floating J" period -- '71 to '72
3" M37's were made up to 1988 according to the catalog:
Mine came with Pachmayr grips, but I put some modern service grips (ordered from S&W) on it.
Mine is a few years newer than yours -- mid '70s.
