I have a 38-44 that left the factory in July 1946. It came to me with a pair of old beat up plastic grips. According to SCSW #4 these transitional revolvers shipped with checkered magna style diamond walnut grips. I would like to find a pair of period correct grips. Would I be looking for sharp shoulder or a different style grip?

Yes, they would be the "sharp shoulder" type, but a postwar Transitional Heavy Duty also has a 1/8" (edit to correct - “longer”) grip frame than post-1950 N frames, so the stocks are a little harder to find than later diamond Magnas. A set with a nearby serial number are more likely to fit.

The transitional Diamond Magnas that you need have the sharp shoulder and also (longer) pre war length on the butt end.
I’m recalling from memory, but believe if they are serialized - they need to be below 70000

I always mix up that longer and shorter thing. :)

The S&W monogram was also slightly different, so you need a find a pair of stocks that dates from 1946-1949.

Can you use Pachmayrs?

If you're a collector, that's a joke. But for many, it's a serious question.

There was some confusion above about frame length. Is the older, pre 1950, frame the longer one?

Mine is pre-war and it is longer.

Here are a couple pictures of the stocks on mine (S 67385). Good luck.

They are hard to find. I will look but I think I have one side of a pair.
