I have a box that I'm interested in dating and getting the value for. It's dark blue-back, ha2 gray metal bolsters on the corners of both halves and a label affixed to the top half that says (from top to bottom):

SMITH & WESSON
38 CHIEFS SPECIAL
Blued ROUND BUTT 2 Inch

Inside is the was paper and half of the warranty card, dated April 15,1955.
The inside of the box top has directions for use printed in both English and Spanish and the bottom half has the statement of liability printed in the same manner.
I have no ability to post pics at this time but I can email pics from my iPhone to serious members...
Looking forward to hearing about this box!
On the bottom of the box is handwritten in silver crayon (?) 70480

70480 is the serial number of the gun that was in the box when both were shipped from S&W. If that number is clearly written, it's for a gun made around 1955, however if the original warranty card is for the gun, the 1955 printing date would indicate the gun was shipped after that date. Does the box have the April 15, 1955 date printed inside it? Ed.

Yes, the bottom of the box, with the printed STATEMENT OF LIABILITY and the WARRANTY, has the date of April 15, 1955 printed on it. But not as an after thought or add on- the date appears to look exactly like the rest of the printing! Right down to the same font and color. And the print on the bottom panel actually looks exactly like the half of the warranty registration card that I have, right down to the same date.
PM with your email and I'll shoot you a couple of iPhone pics of the box.

Working all day and when I just now logged on I saw your post thanks to ladder13! Give me a while to decompress and I'll get the pics to you...
