Jed, we need a little more info. It could be a 38 Long or Short Colt or it could be a 38 Colt Special which is the same as 38 S&W Special. Is there anything else written on the side of the barrel?

It could also be a .38 New Police which is essentially identical to .38 S&W.

If it is marked .38 NP then it is the New Police/.38 S&W cartridge. This IS NOT interchangeable with .38 Special. It could be marked either NP or New Police spelled out.

If marked Police Positive .38 Special it is .38 Special.

It could also be a .38-40 which would probably marked .38 W.C.F.

If marked just .38 on the barrel it is a .38 Long Colt (U.S. Service cartridge).

It isn't likely to be a .38 Short Colt as that was obsolete and no guns chambered for it after sometime around 1900 +/- a few years.
