I have a DA 38 with matching numbers on the butt plate and cylinder of 282825. One like it sold on GunBroker last month that was identified as 5th model with numbers starting with 44xxxx. The rev. looked just like mine except it has a 5 inch barrel and mine is a 4 inch barrel and of course my numbers are lower. Any idea of when it might have been made. I have no desire to sell it. Thanks

Greenmountain50,
Welcome to the forum. Your gun is a third model and was probably made about 1890. S&W manufactured the third model from 1884 till 1895. That model started at serial #119001 and ended at 322700. Without sending for a factory letter there is no way to give an exact date because they wern't always shipped in exact numerical order. Unless this has sentimental value or you have inside information about it being shipped to a famous (or infamous) person it probably doesn't warrent a factory letter. Other people on this forum feel differantly and letter all of there guns, but there were so many of these made it usually doesn't yield much information other than the exact shipping date and who it was shipped to.

Thanks cflier. I had done some research and figured it was a third model although I had no proof. I traded a chain saw I didn't use for the rev. and plan to just keep it around. It came with several s/w rounds. Shot about 10 rounds and it still shoots very good. Thanks again
