Butt serial number 210874 shipped May 14, 1913 to Emil Linck, Hamburg, Germany. 6-inch barrel, adjustable rear target sights, blue finish and checked walnut gold medallion grips. German proof marks, Lyman ivory bead front sight. All numbers match including the grips.
Herr Linck was an importer. Think proof marks were required for civilian sale in Germany.
Mike Priwer says this model introduced the lockwork design that was used by S&W for the next 100 years.
My dad bought the gun in the 60's. I have been the caretaker for the last 30 years.

Very nice gun, cool story too! It's getting tough to find nice target models from the teens in such nice condition. I think most of the real nice ones are locked up in our collections.

That's pretty cool, OP. I'd love to know how it got back to the U.S. from Germany. Where did your dad get it? Did he buy it here in the States, or was he a GI stationed in Germany when he got it?

Dad got the gun at a gun show in Texas or Oklahoma. We went to a lot of gun shows back then.
My guess is the gun came back across the pond with a GI at the end of WWII.
