Your pistol is likely a fine shooting target pistol. Formal target shooting is the intended purpose of the model, and because of this it will not shoot any other type of bullet, which would be too long for the magazine. To the best of my knowledge, no other magazines are available for the pistol.
But don't despair. If you have a desire to shoot nice handguns, you have one there. It is likely a tack driver.

yes, i forgot to mention that. it is a model 52-2 and i like the wadcutter round but if I ever needed that for self-defense I think the wadcutter would just piss somebody off. Is it really that rare? ive done some research on it but honestly...someone else would probably have a better appreciation for it than myself. i was told when i bought it that it shot 2 different kinds of rounds...so i was misinformed.
and the gun shop i took it to said it was rebarreled or something. what does that mean? it's in mint condition and still fires very nicely, love the trigger but im not a collector. I need something with pizzaz in the barrel in case I need to fight off The Groper or something:D

You have a rare gun there, one that is revered by S&W fans and by all target shooters! I would NEVER sell that gun, even though they go for well over $1,000 even as high as $2,000 according to that article blujax01 posted.
You can buy a self defense gun for a few hundred bucks any day of the week. But where are you going to ever find a 52-2?

I appreciate the responses. I enjoy buying and selling guns, so my friends call me first. this gun here i bought for 600, but it has caused so much commotion because some ppl have never seen anything like it. Ive had some offers but the more ppl offer i wondered what it was really worth. I was also told there were less than 1000 mAde and that this is the second one made. How can i tell? I really just wanna sell it or trade it for something like a 9 or 40 or 45 or all 3!!! A girl can wish right?

How about a nice M&P9c?? :D I'd trade you in a heartbeat for any one of those you mentioned.... I can buy those brand new for $400!
If you really don't want it you should get it appraised and sell it to some lucky person on this forum that will cherish it. Then take that money and buy what you really want.... and a nice vacation to a tropical island with the extra money. ;)

I wouldn't know where to take it. The lady at the local gun store thought I was stupid when I told her what kind of gun I had until I finally showed her and she shut her mouth...needless to say she wasnt very helpful and valued it at what I paid for it. How come some the price range is so far apart? I mean $600 up to $2000 is a long way. The previous owner said he was offered $2500 at a gun show in Arizona but at that time declined to sell it. So I really have no idea what I have but trading for that M&P sounds nice. How does this trade thing work anyway?
Any ideas are helpful...I've never spent so much time and effort on researching a gun. But like I said...I know I can't appreciate it as much as somebody else would. It sure is beautiful though!

If you sell your gun out of state, it must go to a ffl dealer.
Your gun is a dash 2, there was a dash 1 and a no dash (modle 52). The comment that there are less than a thousand made is incorrect.
I have purchased a -1 for $600, and a -2 for $800, I would not sell either of these guns for what I paid for them. These would probably sell for $900-1250. With you not having the original barrel, who knows...the original box, documents, barrel tool all help with the value. Check Gun Broker for current value trends.
If you live in my neck of the country (Indiana) I would help you sell it. I do not have any interest in it (but would like a 52 no dash).
