38 Specials and carpenter bees

Went wasp nest hunting with a friend some years back. He was an engineer for a radio station, and these bug(ger)s were HUGE. Infested the transmitter tower power room, nests in every corner. Spraying was out of the question - mist could get in the electronic racks. He had a MKII Target, and I had my Single-Six with 22LR and 22WMR cylinders. We stopped at two stores and cleaned out their stocks of CCI shotshells in both calibers. He suited up in a beekeeper's hat and gloves, and I donned some as well, and I spent the time reloading the cylinders, switching each time to speed up the reloads. The MkII wouldn't cycle shotshells, so we used the Single-Six only.

It worked, and after about 30 minutes, all nests were gone, and all wasps were down (at least 50 flying around in the 12' x 12' block room). Afterwards, he could safely put screen wire over the insides of the air vents and keep them out for good. End of the day, he loved the Single-Six so much I traded even with him for the MkII. I still have it. :)

Built those and hung "em". DIDN'T catch a single bee. Friends had same results.

I did the same with the same results.
Badminton racket works really well, and as mentioned above you have to go smash them after they are
knocked down unless you really whack them good into a hard surface like my patio. :)

I've settled on 1 grain of Bullseye and a magnum primer. Cardboard wad cut from a beer carton on top of the powder and fill with grits. Top with another wad, no need use any wax or glue because I'm headed out to shoot them as soon as they are made. I must have killed 30 or 40 bees yesterday.

You should get with Lyman or somebody and publish a reloading manual. Step by step techniques, loading data for the various cartridges.

Wow - good idea. I have lots of grits, Bullseye, and new 38spl brass. Just need some magnum pistol primers... 12-pack or 6-pack carton cardboard? :)

24 pack! I'm using magnum primers because I'm afraid a standard primer won't light all that hard to ignite powder :).

I made my dipper using a piece of 1/4" Plexiglas and drilling a 1/4" hole almost all the way through. Dumps right at 1 grain of BE. You'll probably need to drill out the flash hole on the casings to keep the primers from backing out and jamming up the gun. I drill mine with a 1/8" bit. Be sure to mark the drilled casing in some fashion, so you won't use them for regular loads.

I used to have my son and his friend use badminton rackets under my farmer's porch, after school. 25 cents a dead body. Some would get by and bore into the ceiling of the porch. For them, I put the nozzle of the sprayer up to the hole with a 74% chlordane mix, and soaked above the ceiling.

Yeah, I know Chlordane is NG . Well it used to be used indiscriminately for everything. The amount I use is not going to kill mankind. Only got about 5 quarts left

How loud are these, relative to typical ammo?

I take a primer tray and tape off all but one hole. Using that as a dipper for Unique I load whatever cast bullet and shoot it OUT OF A SNUBBIE. Shoots about like a slingshot. Never had one stick in the barrel, but I only use them in a 2" revolver. Nice, quiet fun.

I have a lean to that the carpenter bees love to tunnel into. I also had a 6 ft area in my yard that they had made tunnels into the dirt. When I would mow over the area they would fly into me. They never stung me but it was rather scary them flying into me and bouncing off. When the big flood came that finished them off. I now haven't even noticed them around my lean to either.
Dang wasps in my shed are another story. I have been stung many times. I never thought about using shot shells in my revolver to take the nests out. That would be fun. I still would have to shoot and run because it only takes one wasp that didn't get killed to attack me. I believe the spray would be better because the shot shell could possibly blow holes in my tin roofing.
Looks like fun shooting them. Yeah I bet the city folk would have the cops taking you away instead of the bees. Even Calibre quiet rounds with just the primer are loud in a revolver.

I do use my 12ga. 1100 Remington to trim my trees with. I learned how to do that from watching Hickok45 video how to trim trees. No ladder or chainsaw needed.

My .38's are low powered enough that I can shoot against my tin roof with no damage.

Well, our hunting season opened today for handgun,, I bagged one with the 617 no-dash.
Muzzleloader season opens Saturday,,
