Local gun shop called today, he got in a 38 HE model.

Went in and took a look see. serial #427268 (S&W standard catalog 3rd lists between '15 and '42, dealer says his info shows '27).
around 90% +/-, 6" bbl, what looks to be originial stocks, wants 300. Thoughts?

The gun is 1922, maybe early 1923 at the latest. His estimate of 1927 is
almost close enough for government work !

For a 90% gun, the price is high - not out of sight, but high. $225 to $250
is about what its worth, in most markets. The factory made at least 400,000
of those guns, so its not like they are in short supply. The stocks should
be the convex non-medallions.

I just purchased 473XXX. maybe 30% finish. Paid 240 I know it was too much. but after shooting it. I know the money was some of the best I have spent. I have lost more than the 250 on some trades. I plan on carrying this gun and shooting alot. I would jump on the one you are looking at in a heartbeat.

finally got around to taking pictures.
put about 50 rounds through it yesterday, 3" pattern at 30' after the first 6. Really nice shooter, tight lockup, etc.

all numbers match, none inside the stocks. number is different on the yoke as shown in one of the pictures.

We may have paid too much but the way I look at is, this is the first I have seen around here, gun is 80+ years old and still shoots like a champ, and I wanted it.

anyway pictures below.

Gunny,
That's a decent looking M&P, and the grips are of the correct style; they're probably the originals. If you remove the grips and take the right panel into a good strong light, you might find the serial number penciled on the inside. If it's there, be careful not to rub it off or expose it to cleaning solvents.

Gunny, you may have paid a couple dollars extra, but I doubt you will regret it in a few weeks, getting such a fine example. Congrats!
