I am considering purchasing a S&W 39-2 through the internet. It has a serial number A604XXX. Comes with a holster and 4 clips. See the attached picture. It has a lot of holster wear. Is this worth $250?

Questions:

1. Can anyone tell me approximately what year this was made?

2. Is there anything to watch out for... known issues?

3. Any other advice/opinions will be appreciated.

Buying a 39-2

One of the member told me that one of my 39's with a ser# of 622xxx was made in 1981, if that's any help. The 39-2 is the finest pistol Smith & Wesson ever came out with. In my most humble opinion. I own a sizeable collection of 39-2's. I can't think of a bad thing to say about them. If you were ever to need a part, be causious as where you buy that part. Some outlets are way over priced on certain parts. I have enough spare parts to build 5 guns less frames:confused::(. and I'm sure other members would be happy to come to your aide of you need assistance with repairs. I know you will enjoy your new 39-2

Model 39's are some of the best looking and most comfortable pistols out there. They point naturally and shoot great. If you are ok on price and condition...buy it. Sweat the small stuff later. Factory mags are going for north of $30, so factor that in.

The book says 1979-1980. They are fine semi's and, as stated earlier, very comfortable to shoot. I really enjoy mine.

Good Luck,

Jerry

The grips are not original, but probably ae at least as comfortable as the originals. Magazines should have black plastic followers. Magazines with stamped metal followers came with the earlier Model 39 (no dash). they work fine in the 39-2 and are worth more than those with plastic followers. I think the plastic followers give more slick feeding, but it may just be my imagination.

Assuming that the bore is in good condition, and there are no other mechanical issues, that price is very fair for that gun with holster and 4 mags. Its great deal if the mags are original S&W-marked mags.

I love my holster-worn Model 39!

Fits fine in a FOBUS paddle holster for the Colt 1911.
(here with a worn set of Pachmyr's on it)
